Amazon Proserve L5 to L6

Apr 15 16 Comments

How long it usually takes to get promoted from L5 to L6, if you perform well. I have been offered at L5, and being told by HR and HM, that I am rated top L5 during interview process and can get to L6 in less than a year.

They're lying to you. Less than a year is not going to happen. Realistically if you are performing at a top level compared to your other peers who are also very good here, it should take 18 months at the very fastest and could take as long as four or five years. There's no fast track promotion for a wrong level. Technically there is but it is never used and the recruiter and hiring manager are lying to you to get you to accept a lower level. Now everyone thinks they are a higher level than they really are so compare the l5 pay against what you're making now, not title of your current job to your l5 title.

We’re you down leveled? It’s possible to promo in a year or relevel within 6 months - relevels are EXTREMELY rare. But you need strong support, one helluva doc - and a manager who can (re) write it (based on what you’ve submitted) with very favorable L8 support. Both relevels and promo’d w/in a year have happened- I’ve seen it with my own two eyes. But you’re going to need earth shattering data/deliverables AND l6+ champions.

Nope that’s why it’s the unicorn special. You’ll be writing the doc during ur onboarding- that you’ll likely also need to finish early(ier). You’ll need to also have deliverable data in your first 6 months that challenges loop data. Read ur role guidelines for L6 for your job family. That should help you begin to craft ur doc. And find out from your mgr what the datapoints were which supported ur down level - you’ll need to refute that with your 6 month deliverable data points.

Nope. It’s the data points you collect while being an L5 that matters. Loop feedback doesn’t matter.

Exactly. If they say you are almost L6 and wanting to reposition you within 6 months, you need STRONG data points within that 6 months to get L8 approval. Plus your manager needs to commit to write that doc for you.

    • Thank you for the responses. Either I have to be very optimistic and join, thinking it will happen. But if does not happen, will be really disappointed, as at L5 my TC will be less than current.
