I had applied for Amazon 2020 new grad position and was rejected last night. The final round consisted of 3 virtual interviews of 45 minute each. The first 2 rounds were pretty decent and went quite smooth. The third and final round had a chinese interviewer and I faced serious accent issues. I could barely read his lips. So we started the technical coding and this guy just won't explain the requirements clearly added to which his accent was horrible. I agree he could be a great Dev but why the duck companies hire such talent or consider such people as interviewers. His communication killed my energy and the lack of requirement clarification basically rendered me hopeless . .
If you can't distinguish between interviewee and interviewer, I wonder whose communication skills were the problem.
Lmfao OP definitely got owned here
😂 OP deserved it
Perhaps that person was someone you would need to interact closely with in your role. You'll learn as you gain more experience that professional success isn't just about following requirements and writing elegant code. You'll need to communicate and collaborate effectively with people of all types of backgrounds.
You have to understand theres some luck involved in the process. Also know that lot of the times interviewers leave candidates feeling confident even when the round wasnt up to par, so you cant pin this on the last round. As long as you keep knocking on the door and persist with your skill improvements, youll get an offer in no time.
Happened exactly the same way with me during my Facebook onsite. That “one round” killed it all for me as all others went pretty well. tl;dr this will keep happening, you need to suck it up and keep charging ahead with confidence until you find the right team/company for you.
Congratulations, you dodged a bullet.
Was this for Seattle? My final round was just 30 minute behavioral
Even though I passed my interview I feel the same way. My bar raiser had a super thick Indian accent and it was hard for me to understand. They should really consider this when selecting who will conduct these interviews.
Yes maybe they DO consider it! You’re likely to work with all kinda of accents. It is part of the job.
Yes, we work with all kinds of accents but being able to properly speak to convey your thoughts it's also a requirement in professional environments.
My bar raiser had a strong Indian accent too...like I couldn’t hardly understand what she was saying. It was like 45 mins behavioral. She knew nothing about me or my background so like 15 mins was just that. I interviewed for sales though
That's the whole point about companies working on diversity and inclusion. Welcome to the would of interviewees. The objective is for you to demonstrate that you can work with team members from all backgrounds. If you were unable to communicate with the interviewer due to their diverse background then there is no way you would be able to collaborate with them successfully on a daily basis. That's part of the test as well, it is not just about solving the coding problem. Hope this helps you be a better interviewee and you are able to communicate well with your interviewer and bag good offers.

You can give that as feedback to them, but welcome to the world of corporate bull. Get used to it at all levels and learn to deal with it with a cool head.
