Received an offer for a SDE 2 at Amazon. I have 8 years of software engineering experience. I am wondering if I am being low balled. Location: Cupertino, CA Base: 178k Signing Bonus; 55k year one, 45k year two RSUs: 175 units Is it comparable to other SDE 2 comps at AMZN?
I would ask 220 Rsu 65k first year and 55k second year
I would not expect that many RSUs to be given based on the current stock price. If you get it, 👍
Seems like a good start. Assuming I ask for 220, they might meet me in the middle at say 190-200 RSU, Also, 65k + 55k sign-on seems doable...it's not asking for too much *I think*
Another question - Is it better to negotiate over email with my numbers (in response to the email with offered numbers) or should I request the recruiter for a phone call and negotiate over phone? I am thinking email is better because: 1. I am somewhat of a phone-shy/phone-anxious individual 2. The recruiter may not have the decision making authority so she would only be listening to my side of the counter. Suggestions?
Do you mean dollars worth of rsu? I've never seen someone get straight up units. Assuming not, that's the best offer for an sde 2 I've seen and puts you in low sde 3 comp range. Sde 2 range is 170-230 Sde 3 is 250-350
I got my Amazon offer 4 years ago for SDE 2 with TCO of 250 (175 base + 68 sign on + 8 from 5% RSU). I had a PhD and just one year experience at that time.
I did get straight up number of units instead of a dollar value. That's how I have seen it in my previous offers as well. However they did present an annual comp by using 5% of 175 times the stock value on Friday. Btw, thanks for the input.
How did you get amazon email already?
178K base for sde2 is unheard of. U might be very specialized.
don't take the sde2 role. you will get it to see lots of 4-5 yrs experience folks being sde3 and it will take you 2 more years to get there. not worth it
From your observation, what is the typical yoe range for sde2/3, and principal levels?
recently sde3 levelling changed. you can get to sde2 in 1.5yrs sde3 in additional of 3-4..no idea about principal.. sde2 used to be the career level similar to l5 at Google or e5 at fb not any more. sde3 is like them now which you should be at after 7 years in a tier 1 company ideally
That is a solid offer for SDE 2! Congrats! Base and TC are in the top range already. And yes, Amzn down levels external hires aggressively. Promotion to the next level depends on your performance relative to your peers in the same org. A strong org means tougher and longer promo.
Thanks. Your comment makes me feel a little bit more secure and positive about the offer. I understand the down leveling, and I think it's better to accept that fact if I really want the job rather than sulk over it. Maybe a short term dent in grand scheme of things...who knows.
for reference i was given 280k palo alto offer a few month ago for sde2. 10yr exp from a large company in the US. i had multiple offer so that helped. i heard this is absolute max they can go for sde 2. initial offer was 240k tc
Wow that's pretty impressive. I would have jumped at 280k, but then again I don't have any competing offers. I wasn't even looking for a change when the recruiter reached out to me. I interviewed anyway, not expecting to get an offer as I had not prepared at all for the interview. And now I am tempted to join, but don't want to make a hasty decision due to the excitement only to regret later. All the comments on this thread have been super helpful, and luckily no trolling so far :) Thanks everyone!
i understand how you feel. i was reluctant to move due to down leveling but it isn’t too bad actually. less pressure than if i joined as l6(senior). and impression i have is most people here are here to learn for short term (say 2 years) and jump to other place. don’t know how long you’ve been in current position/team but moving to pick up more skills is always good
Going a little off topic, I totally enjoyed my onsite interview. After all the online reading, my expectation was that the BR would make me cry and beg for mercy, but boy he was the nicest gentleman I've come across and one of the best interviewers I have seen (coming from someone who interviews at least 15-20 times every year, for the last 7-8 years). He answered all my questions regarding the coding problem, and even helped me get on track when I went slightly off.
Congrats on a great offer! Did you have lots of system design questions or was it mostly coding problems?
I had 4 interviewers ask me coding problems and 1 interviewer ask me system design problem. Both the BR and HM asked me coding problems, and a Sr. TPM asked me system design. Funny thing is I totally blew the coding problem that HM asked. Totally went blank, when the problem was not necessarily hard...just anxiety I guess. However, right after the interview I sent the recruiter and HM an email apologizing for wasting HMs time as I couldn't even come close to solving the problem. So honestly, I wasn't even expecting an offer after blowing up the interview with HM. However I *think* the BR really liked me...just guessing from his body language during the interview.

Thanks. Will try to negotiate for a higher comp come Monday. Any ideas on how far can I stretch it without pissing the recruiter off?
You're not going to get any more salary. Focus on sign on and RSUs
