Free bananas or free lunch which do you choose?
Why did you post the same thing three times dude? Already lowering the bar for SDE III.
New to the app! Wanted to maximise the responses!
Good luck. The bar for SDE III is pretty high at Amazon ( at least at the AWS org that I work for). They are looking for someone who can have org wise impact. Come up with elegant solutions to difficult problems and chime into any decision that the team makes. So be prepared to be asked a lot of design based questions as well as strong leader based questions that would tie to our leadership principles.
SDE III - hence three posts. I am glad he is not interviewing for SDE 4 or 5.
What's wrong with L4 or L5?
First tip, you don't need to triple post.
I just interviewed for a SDE 2 L5 spot. It was some data structure stuff. With a design question based around fluctuating bursts of traffic so a typical scaling issue. They want those leadership principles to be second nature so write out examples of each and talk through them out loud. Ask questions about their questions whenever you are uncertain. I should mention I got the job.
I was recruited after 23 years of engineering experience. Tons of projects of all kinds, except for “big systems”. So despite all of that, I was leveled as an SDE 2. I took it, and I’m actively pursuing a reasonably quick promotion. Amazon is not (or should not be) desperate for SDE 3 industry hires, so it’s a long shot for you no matter what your background. But if you don’t have the big systems experience you cannot get hired as an SDE 3, no way.
Thank you for the info!
may i ask why you took the job, money?
I just had finished the process a month ago. Hiring Process * 1 Technical Screening Round * 5 Onsite Rounds * Final Offer In my case, most of the emphasis was on leadership principles and then problem-solving. There was a bit of system design in one of the rounds. I've written a detailed blog about my experience here: https://freezefrancis.medium.com/amazon-sde-iii-interview-experience-4c753b581c3

1. Look at our leadership principles and think of one or two anecdotes where you demonstrated each one (strong ones, no bs. Amazon employees can smell bullshit better than a German Shepherd). Then when you’re asked a behavioral question listen to the key words that will tell you which principle(s) we are asking about. 2. For SDE 3 you’ll need to draw on solving larger problems, often a problem that would require multiple systems put together to solve. You’ll probably be judged on stuff like whether or not your system adequately deals with scale, logical separation of concerns, operational maintainability, Inventing and Simplifying, etc
Thank you!
