I have a SDE2 offer from Amazon with 10YOE, offer is for 280K. I feel like I was lowballed on the level. Should I consider it? Current TC 250k
Is that in the Bay? That’s an enormous SDE2 offer for Seattle.
Yes.. not Seattle
No point to take the offer. What they will do is promote you in the next 1-2 years which you should already be promoted to and then you cannot ask for raise in the near future
Definitely lowball for this yoe. But who really knows what you’re worth ?
Lowball offer. Only take this if you need Amazon brand that bad
How’s breakdown of Tc?

Decline. Be where you are try after 6-12 months for SDE3. Promotion from SDE2 to SDE3 is not easy and depends lot on the project you get than your skills or hard work
Realistically though, if this was a serious SDE3 contender, they would have suggested upleveling to SDE3 in the loop. Not convinced someone could go through another loop after that short of an amount of time and be considered for SDE3. That said, 10yoe is well outside the normal range for SDE2. You are totally correct that 2>3 promotion can be very difficulty
Know a guy who had sde2 offer with 8yr experience. He declined and joined as sde3 after an year
i was in a similar place (10 yoe, offered sde2, 250k tc in seattle). you will be miserable. promo is not easy, you have many engineers with 2 yoe at the same level as you. don’t take it. i regret my decision everyday and i am preparing interview now
Curious where you are seeing SDE2 with 2yoe. Unless someone was hired out of college as an SDE1 and managed to get promoted quick, for outside hires, 5yoe is minimum for SDE2, with 5-7 being the typical suggested range.
I was external hire as SDE2 with 1yr 10months experience. Funny thing is from my previous employer a Sr guy who was 2 level above me and was having 11yr experience also joined as SDE2.
Depends on where you're hired etc. You're above the upper end of the range on yoe for typical SDE2 (5-7y), but the role guidelines and expected experience are pretty clearly spelled out for all roles and levels. In many cases, depending on where applicants come from, they haven't had the opportunity to show experience in areas required for SDE3 regardless of yoe. TC seems on par with what my org has hired SDE2's at, other than that. Base salary is capped pretty low across all of Amazon. If you're not happy with TC focus on getting experience outside of Amazon first then try again. I wouldn't bank on powering through to a promotion soon after starting.
I’m bummed about the level than TC.. Been leading projects the last couple of years, but had one bad round in the interview. That probably decided my level. Have onsites coming up with UF.. hopefully will crack one of them
Don't be bummed about level. If you can lead projects and kick ass, you will have an opportunity to do so, and will be rewarded. Level is just a pay grade, it does not define your work
I think in Amazon it does. The impact SDE3 has is way more than sde2. In Amazon, people ask level before starting conversation.

SDE2 is going to put a cap on how much. If you feel like gambling, join and get promoted to SDE3
No way. Promotion from sde2 to sde3 will take 2 years + there are a lot of gambling around it
