Israeli precision-guided munition likely killed group of children playing foosball in Gaza, weapons experts say
I have an offer from Amazon for L5 SDM Cloudformation(Boulder). I had interviewed for L6, and they downgraded me to L5. I have call with hiring manager to see if I am interested in Cloudformation team. Full offer has not been revealed because I have to agree to join the team first, but the recruiter said it will be in low 300s. I have another opportunity with a pre-ipo for 240k (175k base, 12.5% bonus, 45k stocks once company goes public in Jan. This is on the offer letter.) Thoughts? Any insights into cloudformation team? Based on all the Amazon reviews, I am inclined to take the pre-ipo offer but wanted to run through the pros and cons with y'all. Any long term repercussions I should think about before making this decision?
45k for eng director seems low... That's the entirety of the upside?
Yes, that's what they have on offer right now.
Anyone aware of standard way to evaluate startup offer?
No brainer. Get pre-ipo.
It depends on where you are right now, if you are a new manager, spending 1-2 years at Amazon could expose you to sound engineering processes (not counting URA), which could help you land a better engineering leadership role elsewhere. Don’t be swayed too much by the title, I’ve seen startups offering titles anywhere from Director to VP/CTO but the role is essentially that of a manager who is also expected to ship code. If that’s your thing, go for it, but don’t compare titles, the pay and the scope of the role is what matters, titles are meaningless.
I have 6+ years experience as Dev Manager. In the new role, I will have Dev Managers report to me. But this is solid advice, and the root of my conundrum. Is getting few years of experience at Amazon worth it in the long run for my career.
These are very different opportunities by nature and it's unlikely you'll find both equally appealing. Amazon if you like to play by the book with adult supervision in an established world. Pre IPO if you like to improvise more and be a part of establishing things without lots of the guardrails. It might help for you to introspect a bit and figure out what you'd like to be first.
Right...part of the issue with Amazon offer is that it's L5, and I read that L5 is not really a manager level for external hires. They give you year or 2 to get promoted to L6, or they fire you. Appreciate the input!
I came into Amazon as an L5, made it to L6. Sounds like your L5 TC will be about what I make now, and I've been here a while. Shit makes mad. Good thing I'm out.
