I started working at Amazon as a Sourcing Recruiter in August. When I didnt have a Hire yet at my 3 month mark my manager started to try to get me to leave by saying that she doesnt think its a good fit for me here and that i might have to go on a performance review and “you don’t want to stick around for that” im going to stick it out as long as i can despite the long hours and pretty awful treatment because I already used my 18k (14k after taxes) starting bonus to pay off student loans and send to my mom. Does anyone know the rules regarding if you get laid off within your first year do you have to pay back your starting bonus? im honeslty so miserable that i would totally find a new job and quit, but I am almost positive they would expect my bonus back if i left voluntarily. If anyone has any insight regarding the parameters for if / when you have to pay your bonus back and also how long you have to stay with the company before you don’t have to pay the bonus back I would really appreciate it. Also, if I do get laid off does anyone know if there is some type of severance package? I know this is more because my manager doesnt like me and less about my numbers because ive been meeting my inputs and am so close to getting my first hire. I had 11 onsite transitions this month and my goal was 10 so its not like im not hitting my inputs. is this something I should go to HR about? Sorry for the long-winded post. I could really use some help! (i work remote so its really tough for me to find people i can trust within the company)
What does it say in your offer letter? In the employee handbook?
What level are you and what roles are you looking for? I have pipelines that might help you out. You can get Res IDd or Candidates Recruiter and I'll share FFTW and may toss in a couple FTTO if we get in a groove. Relo and bonus wont have to be paid if you're let go but youd have to stay for the PIP. If you stay you should still get the severance. Also if you're not on a dev plan have you thought about potentially transferring to another team that may be better aligned to your sourcing skills?
If you leave on your own free will you relo has a clawback clause of 2 years and bonus has a clawback clause of 1 year. Both are prorated so youd owe 75% back
I’m an L4 and I’m looking for SDE 2s and 3s and even SDMs if they’re good. My roles are in Seattle and I’m AWS. My manager told me that if I tried to internally transfer that she would not give me good feedback which is bull because I’ve literally worked my ass off and only been here three months.
“already used my 18k (14k after taxes)” How did you get 14k off 18$k bonus? I got only 8$k off of 20$k bonus after taxes
The offer letter should say what the terms are for the bonus. Obviously there’s some point where you can leave on your own and don’t have to pay it back
Stay if you can bear it. Then you get the severance and can file for unemployment. Don’t get those if you quit.
That’s exactly what I thought. I will just ride it out for the severance if that’s what I need to do. But I am just not the kind of person to give up so like I really am trying hard to prove myself but it’s just an uphill battle bc my manager has already used me as a scapegoat and has confirmation bias around everything I do. At this point she already threw me under he bus as a scapegoat for why the entire team (all L5s except for me an L4 and all sit in seattle except for me) is underperforming. She wants to prove to her lead that I need to go so everything I do is a battle with her.
Just pretty miserable :/ but I am not gonna let her win and take my bonus so I’ll tough it out even if it means going through PIP and getting let go
I’m down to get hired for AWS lol. Is it in the US?
Yep in seattle! I do SDE 2s and 3s... what’s your background?
Oh awesome, can I DM you? I have about 2 years of exp.
Why don’t you use blind to get some candidates?
I remember reading details about paying the signing bonus back if i left in the first year, depending on how many days you work. Check your offer letter it should say
You'll have to pay back a prorated amount if you leave within a year. Sometimes I feel bad for Amazon recruiters. Amazon's reputation is just so bad.

Hey do you want to hire me? What org are you hiring for?
AWS SDEs
Considering the bad repo of Amazon work culture it is hard to hire.
