Amazon: Stay or leave for comp

May 16, 2019 8 Comments

I joined AMZN as an SDE 1 in March 2018 and got promoted in Q1. Numbers after promotion:

Base: 145k + 40k from stocks and bonus for 2019-20. From 2020 I'll have additional stocks to makeup the missing bonus.

That brings my total compensation to 185k.

The thing is I'm enjoying working and get to work on some challenging distributed systems problems. But the industry wide SDE 2 TC seems to be shooting north of 235k and even more these days. Is this a good time to stick around and gain a couple of more years of experience before trying elsewhere? Companies such as Google may pay more if I look to switch in a year but surely won't give me SE 2. Is it worth switching for only comp? Also, how much does Amazon pay increase assuming you've performed well and stock doesn't increase much?

Op, there's a middle ground here with advises you're getting. Why not do a few interviews to see what TCs you can get? Then make the decision to leave or not.

If TC is your goal, your problem isn’t unique to Amazon. It’s always much easier to get higher TC when switching between companies.

If you like what you are doing and finding it a learning and challenging experience as well, I would say, stay. An extra 30-40k in TC will not guarantee you the satisfaction that the quality and liking towards work will.

1 year in US and 2 years in another country which I can barely call YOE tbh.

If you are still learning and working on interesting projects, stay for your this year’s stocks and sign-on bonus (assuming you got sign-on over two years). Leave by March 2020 once you have all that money and apply as SDE2 elsewhere

But I would leave, it probably won't get any better.
