Can anyone weigh in on how an Amazon hiring manager handles the budget for their teams compensation? I recently received an AWS L6 TPM offer that was on the lower side of the pay band (300k). The recruiter mentioned that the HM's budget limited what they could offer. Has anyone heard of a situation like this? From my experience HMs deal with headcount not actual budget, is this not the case at Amazon? Edit: This is for a product that is a new initiative. HM (who is a PM, not TPM manager) is creating the team from the ground up. TC - ~200k cash #tech #aws #amazon #amazonaws #compensation #negotiation #career
Comp is determined by compensation committee based on a multitude of factors. HM controls headcount, not compensation, however they can influence by asking for exceptions within pay band for desirable candidates.
At Amazon we have comp bands for levels. Saying HM budget is limited is horse shit.
So I asked for an amount at the high end of the pay band and the recruiter responded with the part about the HM budget.
Yeah, I mean if you have competing offer you can push or say you can't accept because comp doesn't match what you want etc
A lot depends if it’s a fixed or variable position. Variable positions grow with the business and don’t have the scrutiny during OP cycles that Fixed roles have
Would you mind elaborating? What is an OP cycle?
Most offers are at the upper limit for the band. Recruiter and hiring manager will need to get permission to go above that limit. If you are asking for a lot above the limit, they will have to explain to their managers why you are super valuable and it would be a loss for the company not to hire you, but you are not so valuable that you aren’t at the next level. This can be a tricky argument for them.
From what I can tell, I am well below the upper band. I asked the recruiter what the band was and they said they didn’t know. From my research on blind, other TPM forums, and levels.fyi, my current offer is at least 15% below the top of the band for this location.
