If your team does daily standups, your manager is a micromanager
Amazon has asked for a ‘video conference’ interview instead of onsite interview. I’m very skeptical of the effectiveness of this. How does this work? Do you have any experience? Any suggestions?
I just did it, it was okay. coding and behavioral rounds are about the same as a phone screen, so nothing changes there. Only thing to be on the lookout for is the Sys design round, which for me transformed into an object oriented design round. Do expect some friction since it’s a new policy/process, but otherwise it was fairly effective.
Is it because that it is hard to draw for system design? For ood did you still do coding?
Yeah, it’s hard to draw an end to end diagram on anything and relay via video chat, so it took the form of OO design. Yes code was involved, but pseudo code was fine
Are they changing the number of interviews to <5 for the virtual interviews? 5 virtual interviews seems like torture tbh
No change
No it's only a temp change for Corona virus
I just got the same notification for my Google interview. I have no clue how in the world the design interviews are supposed to work over a video call and this is change is pretty infuriating honestly
Amazon changed their policy to switch all the onsites due to Corona virus. This is why. Don't cough on us we already have it spreading in our offices
How effective was it to actually know more about the team you’re gonna be working with? Phone screens generally are OK to filter for more exhaustive interviews, but I don’t know how good is it as replacement for in person interviews which (in my limited experience) also have a non-coding behavioral/human factor (different than behavioral interview)
You’re fine.
No different than a video conference call. Check lighting, make sure background photos/posters are not offensive (it happens), comb your hair, brush your teeth, etc. Pro tip- have your resume and talking points printed out and ready to refer to off camera. Relax and enjoy the conversation.
Ready to refer to off camera- What does this mean?
So you can read notes while talking. Without them seeing you holding the paper. Like cue cards
The change from in-person on-site final loops is new for us too, we just started it last week in response to COVID19. We'll work it out together with you, we're committed to making it work and have the same focus on making it a positive experience for you as we do for in-person interviews. If you're not sure about any aspect of the process, please speak up and ask your recruiter beforehand or your interviewers on the big day!
Thanks everyone. This is helpful. Not necessarily my preferred way but I understand. Really interested in the team, so hopefully it works out.
When is your interview? Let us know how it goes and your thoughts about the virtual onsite process.
It works fine, but it’s a new process. Make sure you have a good headset and test it for echo/feedback.
