Hi I got LE rating last year and was put on dev list (rating decided by new L8 manager as my L7 manager left for another team and the L8 over indexed on other people’s feedback on me vs my managers). New manager (L8) kicked my ass and put me through the grind, gave me a big project to lead and I am now a favourite of the L8 who is mentoring me and grooming me to be more successful (he also got me out of dev list in July / August). Issue is my L8 manager is very very influenced by a very senior L7 who doesn’t like me. I thought with a huge success behind me, this L7 would be fair to me now, but he is constantly harping and providing critical feedback to the L8 which makes the L8 question whether I’m again reverting to my old methods. My sense is the L8 wants to give me a good assessment (HV for sure and maybe TT as I’ve cracked a huge project that’s been acknowledged by our VP as well). My L8 has also praised me to the L10. However, last year, I was on dev list because the L7 who doesn’t like me completely screwed me over in the OLR and the L8 didn’t know me that well and was being given filtered feedback. Even now, the L8 sometimes gives me feedback that I might be reverting to old methods and is worried how I might be perceived by peers (outside of his tutelage) minus his support. This feedback is usually given after the L7 does a whinging session with the L8. For some reason, the L8 either respects the L7 a lot or is afraid of his opinion and not acting on the same. Please advise. The L8 said recently “I can only carry you so far.” I feel it isn’t fair feedback given the hours I’ve put in and the results for the business that I’ve delivered. The thing is the L8 is not consistent. One day he’ll evaluate me for bigger roles in the team, next day he’ll say I’m not meeting the bar. One day he’ll praise me to VPs, next day he’ll say I have to improve. I’m confused 🤷♀️ Can you guess from this what’s going on and what kind of rating I can expect in the upcoming talent review (pls take the poll). Also, please leave subjective comments to help me decipher as follows: A) what is the politics at play B) what can I do to influence the outcome of the talent review in my favor, if any (I have tried being nice to the L7, but he hits from behind when nobody is looking) C) is this L7 even supposed to be part of my official talent review as I’m L7 (though IC) and my manager is L7? My manager wants to retain me in the team - that part is clear. But wants to develop me more before offering higher responsibilities and also doesn’t want this L7 to question his judgement with respect to rating or higher responsibilities. Lot of people who don’t know the background think I’m headed for TT rating though given as I’ve led a hugely succesful global project this year What rating can I expect (pls take the poll) and pls help me understand what’s going on, if there’s a future in this team, or if I should suggest I want to leave and exercise leverage around my leaving for assessment (or will it backfire)? What I’ve learned at Amazon is that L4-L6 is largely about the merits and L7+ is largely about the optics/politics. You don’t specify your level but from what I’m reading between the lines you’re an L6. Am I right?

The sad but funny part is that it took me multiple reads to realize that OP is 'L7'..with this kinda long winded writing style, I think OP first needs to take a step back and bring clarity of thought to the table.
Your L8 doesn't have a real opinion on you. The back-and-forth feedback indicates that, instead of taking input and creating their own summary of your performance, they're taking the easy route and just telling you what others are saying. The rating you end up with will depend on what happens in the 2 minutes they give you in OLR. If someone provides evidence that you're still not meeting the bar and your L7 and L8 don't have counter-evidence ready (which the vacillation indicates they won't), you will be LE again. Also, I've been in some 12 OLRs. I have never seen an LE go to TT next year. The two paths I usually see are: LE again and be targeted for PIP or HV with cautionary statements aimed at the manager.
Well the L8 does give me positive feedback. But then goes back to saying - I think you’re great, but you still need to work on what others are saying etc. sucks 😔 I report to the L8 directly actually. And the L7 manager who hates me also reports to the L8. I’m an L7 IC. Is the L7 manager even going to be part of my OLR? My L8 seems to be intimidated / influenced by him a lot.
