Hello folks, I'm currently an SRE at Google and I'm close to getting an offer at Amazon. Being primarily an ops guy and cloud architecture guy, I'm not very amazing at coding and it showed during my interviews. The recruiter said i can either go for cloud support engineer L5 or look for a similar L5 role on their site, but they can't offer me a Dev or cloud architect role at this level. Sould i go for it and work my way up once I'm in. Or what other roles are in line that i can pick? I personally don't want "support" in my title. I feel that I'm past that phase already. YOE: 8 Current TC: 205k L4 Coding level: beginner LC easy Location: Bay area Please advise what career path i should choose. Or should I work with the recruiter at Facebook that's approaching me for PE role. They're ready to give me time for coding interviews. Thanks
Levels are just a joke. Non-eng levels are usually +1 - so you don’t actually lose anything if you join at L4 . In terms of compensation as well, L5 as non-eng will pay you exactly or less like L4 eng role. So if they are offering L4, go there. It’s very hard to build on coding skills while having a full time job. Being close to devs will be good and may make it easier.
We have people slinging shitty code all the time here. I see it everyday. You’ll have to go for a role change here if you decide to become an SDE, which means interviewing...with coding most likely. It’s not a matter of working your way up
If you don't know how to code and are just an ops guy with knowledge of basic cloud architecture concepts, then a support role is a fair match.
Fair point. In that case I'm better off continuing as an SRE at G instead of dealing with the support burnout at A. I guess I'll work on my coding and reach leetcode hard, then switch to a proper sde role. Thank you for replying
You could also consider contributing to any open source tooling that you use on the job, maybe k8s for example.
Stay away from Cloud support. shitty management, too much politics. not enough growth.. you can still join cloud support L5 and transfer to Solutions Architect role internally as L5.
Just curious about the Solution Architect role. How is the culture of this team? What is the role and comp as compared to SDE3?
Are you for real ? So you want to go from google SRE to amazon call center cloud support ? Cloud support is the worst job at amazon. It’s a call center in its truest form. People regret joining it and job can be done by a high school dropout with few months of training. And management are low achievers in their lives or coming from call center experience , so you can imagine the atmosphere. Please stay away.
At google you didn’t have to do coding ? What is your current level at google ? Based out of east coast ?
I do, but it's not one of my sharpest skills Based in SF
L4 at Google. OP updated
