Heard back about an L6 PM-T position today from the recruiter after having my onsite last Thursday.

He said that he's restricted from giving any feedback whatsoever and that though they didn't feel I'd "be a good fit for the position" that I was very much still someone they wanted at Amazon and that my interviews went very well.

He said to pass him other positions I'd be interested in and also he'd keep an eye out as well. Also mentioned I could skip the whole process the for the next position and just get the HM to provide a thumbs up or thumbs down.

I tried getting more guidance from him on what the hell to even look at in terms of role or level but he gave away nothing. He did try to confirm salary range again and that's about it.

Anyone at Amazon know if I should try for L7 given my YOE or what else might be going on? Kind of feel like I don't even know what to look at.

... Also, yes I know about PIP. Har har har. :)

TC: 230k
YOE: 11, 9 as PM, currently manage 4 PMs.

Thanks in advance.

They rejected you for L6 and you think you should give L7 a try?

You passed the L6 bar, you just didn’t fit with the team. They will set up additional (a little more informal) loops with other teams if you are interested. They won’t up level you to L7, that you’ll have already happened. I know this because this exact thing happened last week to someone that is joining my team as an l6 pm

  • I'd stick to L6 and try once and see how it goes. Keep interviewing elsewhere though.

My guess is you passed the interview, but they hired someone else into the role first.

They definitely will not let you skip the loop for an L7 role, as the interviewers were not evaluating you for L7.

  • These recruiters also have a solid idea about job levels across banks and other tech companies. With that TC and YOE, I am guessing you are a VP in Chase. They won’t offer L7 to a VP at Chase. This is bullshit but this is how it is.

This is how I also got into Amazon. Passed L6 but not a fit for team. So there are 2 ways to do this.
    1. The recruiter can find open roles and share with you to see which one you want.
    2. You can find roles you like and share with recruiter to set up chat with hiring manager.

There will be no new loop. Just a chat with hiring manager
