Amazon downlevel

Heard from the recruiter that I passed onsite but they are offering SDE I. My current level (not with WD anymore) is somewhere in between SDE II - SDE III according to Levels fyi. I know it's not equivalent and things are different between companies but I feel SDE I is for new BS grads etc. I have PhD and almost 3 YOE in the industry doing ML etc. In the interview there were 4 rounds and half of them was LP. I got like 2 coding questions (about 30 mins each) overall and 1 system design (around 30 mins).

Recruiter told me he can try to reach out to other recruiters for L5 Applied/research Scientist positions.

Would they allow me to give additional interviews or start from scratch?

Current TC:220k
Location: Bay Area

We didn't even talk about the offer from Amazon when he told me it's SDE I. I told him the level is something I can't accept and they would not meet my expectations with SDE I band.

Amazon levels you mostly on your interview performance. Their YOE in their reqs are just "guidelines" and its a sliding scale. Sounds like you didnt meet the bar to be leveled at L5 based on your interview performance.

What’s your official title? In my experience they don’t care about your educational qualifications and place you based on industry experience alone . Maybe you didn’t do great on System Design and that’s why they down leveled you. If they are offering 220k that’s SDE2 band anyway
