This is all anecdotes under AWS. Finally AWS bad culture and terrible employee treatment has started firing back. Teams are having hard time to hire. Folks pass the bar often get better offers elsewhere or demand out of band TC. Another usual source of talent, India, is under Covid disaster so they can’t do transfers. As a result: - hiring an external L6 SDE to lead a team has been impossible for many teams - managers were hired for months but only manage to have 1-2 L4 reports so far. Without reports, they’re basically useless - greenfield/interesting projects are somewhat easier to hire but most folks are internal candidates and the internal pool is limited These hiring issues won’t show immediate impact on earning report, but when other companies start ramping up hiring post Covid, we’ll see a mass exodus from Amazon. Less talents mean AWS will be barely able to keep the light on. Forget about new projects. This is a golden time for GCloud and Azure to catch up and surpass AWS. Next 6 months will be very interesting. Unless AMZN price pulled a significant hike like last year, Andy Jassy and the new AWS CEO will have a nightmare.
TC or GTFO
Isn’t “TC or GTFO” for people asking for info from the board? He/She is sharing info so no need for TC I would think.
It's the first rule of Blind. No exceptions 😎
L6 compensation at amzn is pathetic, that's also an important factor
What do you think it is?
L6 TC for external hires is actually not bad and many VPs are willing to override offer to counter. They’re desperate to hire. The bigger factors related TC are: - Amazon doesn’t have refreshers so G/FB TC second year onward will be always better if stocks grow at the same rate - They’re afraid that AMZN price is going nowhere
Interviewed at Amazon last week for a L6 position but I think I failed the bar raiser and they might just give me L5….
It has to eventually catch up to them. Hopefully an impetus for change
I interviewed once at AWS and failed on purpose. I couldn’t get out of that loop fast enough once I realized that this isn’t the place I want to be. Haven’t bothered interviewing there since then.
What happened?
Nah I failed on purpose as well and i'm still bugged a ton from recruiters that tell me to please applying again for AWS. My rule of thumb is that is a company is coming after an idiot like me than they're getting desperate. Nah I tried to pass I'm just that dumb at interviews.
The ONLY reason people put up with shitty amazon culture is because the stock kept going up. No more… so nobody good is joining.
As long as stock keeps rising they will be fine. It's almost like a Ponzi scheme - everything is ok as long as things are increasing
I feel that with all the demand there is for "top" talent companies like this can't afford to turn devs off. They'll just work somewhere else. I'm glad I don't work for Amazon or Facebook so I can endlessly complain about them and their policies on twitter. I know Google isn't perfect but it's a lot better than them IMHO.
It is not just Amazon, most companies with toxic culture are having issues with hiring good talent
Curious to hear how’s your experience with spaceX. I’ve heard bad stories but not sure if it’s still so stressful.
It’s the opposite at Tesla. When I was there, WLB was terrible but people from G and F kept coming. Elon is honestly a god for attracting this kind of talent with his personality.
About time. I told many of my friends interested in coming here to forget it and find somewhere better. Also issues with attrition too. Many starting to wake up and dump Amazon for the dumpster truck it is
