hi All, i had a great Amazon L7 PM interview last week. however the recruiter took time to speak with me and told me that i did not perform well in Product Strategy which is important in L7 role. however, i was an outstanding performer in other aspects. she told i should wait for 2 years, which i feel is odd. i told her that may be i did not articulate myself better. i think the interviewer was looking for specific keywords in the product strategy. But i dont know where the gap is? what do you guys recommend i do? #productmanager #l7 #pm #principalproductmanager
What's current TC ?
Current $200 + bonus
200 in TCS? What are you, TATA?
Hard to know the exact issues without knowing exactly what questions were asked and how you answered.
Should I ask if I could look for l6 role?
If the candidate does not raise the bar for the level they were considered, the hiring loop automatically considers the candidate for one level below. If they rejected you they must have already considered for both levels. So I don’t think it is worth asking the recruiter if you could be considered for l6. But on the other hand do it if you think it will give you closure at the cost of appearing desperate.
What if I look for referral from the recruiter for other l6 roles outside of this group?
Yeah sorry to burst your bubble but there’s no way you were interviewing for an L7 role... max L6, but can confirm when you give offer details..
I used to manage a product portfolio that delivered $30m annual revenue with savings to customers over $500m with a team size of 52 associates. I think I should aim for L7 if not more?
What’s the exact job title?
Well, it depends on what he did at TCS. As an example, If op was a VP or SVp at TCS incharge of all US clients with > 100M client revenue and specific to AWS migrations, L7 will be a step down. Please don't generalize a persons worth to their company's brand!
Thanks. Just realized how low is the market brand for Tcs :-(
Honestly you should've known what is the market value of TCS given the amount of years you've worked. I'm a hiring manager and honestly I'd be pretty skeptical even interviewing engineers/managers at such senior levels coming from TCS. Firstly, there are strong doubts on the individuals capability to perform at such senior levels and second the kind of culture you'd bring in to the org. We've generally seen people from consulting(and Especially Indian chop shops) have a very different way of working and getting work done from others. Sets a strong prior against the candidate, unfortunate but true. Good luck with your interviews.
In any case hiring from TCS is discouraged as it is a services company and very different from a product company. As a hiring manager myself, I would be very skeptical hiring someone at principal level from a services company. OP should first get into a product company that is a startup and move to Amazon L7 later. That way there is no downleveling involved.
Well there are lot of products that TcS develops and implements for its clients. You should check the website to know the products
That’s true. It’s relatively easy to get into SDE L4/L5 roles if you are from TCS/Infy/Wipro etc. But L7 is pretty high leadership role (I think you interviewed for a leadership role and not Principal Eng). These service companies operate in a different space and most of them are not suitable for high growth workspaces. Not to discourage but people really have a bias against service companies especially when hiring for important roles. One more thing that matters is your tenure at TCS. If that’s the only company you’ve worked for or if you have been there for over 7-8 yrs it’s unlikely you will clear the L7 bar!
L7 PM requires a very broad set of skills and expernces. Mastery of product strategy is definitely something that you should be able to demonstrate in there interview. As for leveling, we recently hired a VP from Oracle as an L7 Senior Manager of PM, just to give you a reference point.
You didn't drown the interviewers with LPs. That's why. Your next step is to frame everything you do in LPs. Take your breakfast for example: - Skip breakfast: Frugality - Eat dinner leftovers: Invent and Simplify - Expired milk and cereals: Disagree and Commit - Eat bananas in car: Bias for Action, Earn Trust - Full course: Insist on the Highest Standards And so on...
What type of questions were you asked, neo4mmatri?
Tcs to Amazon L7 ??????????

What levels ?
