I have 7+ years of industry experience and I am a HW Engineer at Amazon. Internally, I'm tagged as SDE 1 (when you go deeper into pay roll information) Is this how HW Engineers are viewed -- entry level SW Engineers? Or is there something else going on?

What is the relationship between Level 4 and SDE 1?

My Job title: Software Dev Engineer
My business title: Electrical Engineer
Level: 4

How do I make sense of all this info?

Hardware Engineers are HDE I , HDE II etc . Since you are level 4 you are HDE1/SDE1 if you role is more related to software side of hardware ( firmware, automation ? ) or anything similar !!

    L5 - SDE2/HDE2, L6 - HDE3/SDE3 !

L4 sounds unreasonable for you , you have a MSc ?

Levels apply across job families. Entry level software engineers (SDE 1) are considered L4. Other job families have L1-L3, for example in support, sales, warehouses, recruiting, etc.. Most other engineering disciplines use the se leveling as software dev engineers, including systems engineers, product and project managers. I suspect hardware engineers are similar.

I would interpret all of that to mean you are a L4, which is a similar level to entry level software engineers. The job and business titles are set up by HR and management when you're hired and sometimes nonsensical.
