I am talking with Amazon about SDM position. It seems according to the posts here that 160k salary and 350k TC are considered good for this position. I am quite surprised. In Facebook M1/E6 (maps to SDM per levels.fyi) gets 210k salary, 700k TC. Is all Amazon comp so bad or just management?
I don't think E6 gets 700k? I thought it's closer to 500k
For those numbers you would need to interview as an L7
Facebook does not shell out 2M stocks for E6 lol. I doubt that even happens for E7.
My numbers for Facebook are based on appreciated stock grants, not on new offer numbers (I think Facebook gives to E6 now offers up to 1.3M in rsus).
I guess so. But I still believe new hires are not easily offered those numbers (1.3 mil RSU). Also when did you join FB and how long have you been at FB and whats your current tc? If you expect Amazon to match the appreciated TC then that wont happen. They may match the target Tc but at L7 I guess.
Are you M1? What’s your current TC? Why look at levels fyi
Look at levels.fyi because I don't work at Amazon. My current TC is in the post
In that case, what the above said is true: nobody will match your stock appreciation. They don’t call them golden handcuffs for nothing
All this will cliff out for most people in the next couple of years, my TC as SDE2 was 400k+ due to stock appreciation and I’m still making that much as SDE3. But I expect to cliff after couple of years when all the juicy grants end and reality hits based on grants given at today’s price. I rate myself as an above average engineer who gets things done, but I’m certain no one would have paid me 400k+ as an SDE2 maybe as an SDE3, but I wouldn’t get that outside. It’s a golden cuff, so I’m biding my time resting and vesting, practicing leetcode and will jump when I hit the cliff.
Wait for this year's perf. If you are TT you might be enticed with what they offer in year '19 and '20. Yet another golden handcuff. Also Sde 3 at Amazon means complete independence of what you want to do and how you want to run it. So keep that in mind before venturing out. Was previously Sr.Sde when I left Amazon.
I agree with your assessment on the complete independence part and also on the wait on watch cause there is still time. Thank You, what I said above is the nuclear option if the cliff is too bad to digest :) It sounds like you are missing the independence you had at Amazon? If you don’t mind, could you elaborate on that?
You’re comparing your stock appreciation TC to a new hire TC. Not a valid comparison. Compare new hire FB offers to Amazon new hire offers. I’m sure FB is a little higher but not to the magnitude you’re stating
Bay Area L6 SDM comp goes to 450k target. Facebook M1 goes to around 500k for new offers. Both can likely go 10-15% higher with an exception. If you want to compare stock price appreciation inflated comp, L6 at Amazon (external hires from 2-3 years back) are easily in the high 500s/low 600s range, vs. your quoted 700k TC. In short, the differences are much less than you are making out by comparing realized comp in Bay Area to current target comp in Seattle (and even that 350k number is not top of band for external offers).

Now you know why Amazon is not tier 1 company. That’s not surprising.
