Amazon non compete

Anyone had a bad experience with Amazon non-compete? It seems a bit excessive to me.

What state are you in? Relevant to how enforceable it is

JPMorgan Chase LXkU65 OP Dec 26, 2019

Washington

Soon will be hard to enforce in WA: https://immixlaw.com/2019-wa-h-b-1450-washington-state-non-competition-covenants/

Unless you are an L8 or higher, you are probably fine.

Not really, I was not L8, HR even also said will not but finally applied to me. Please support to ban non compete proposed by FTC https://www.regulations.gov/document/FTC-2023-0007-0001

How did it apply to you? What did amazon do to enforce it?

McKinsey bummR Dec 26, 2019

Has a friend in Seattle and they enforced it on her, they can use it if you sign it. In California it’s irrelevant from what i hear

JPMorgan Chase LXkU65 OP Dec 26, 2019

What happened?

McKinsey bummR Dec 26, 2019

She eventually left and is doing well, but she had to not work for a period I think

Apple blurf Dec 26, 2019

Don’t sign a non compete unless they pay you enough so you won’t have to work again.

JPMorgan Chase LXkU65 OP Dec 26, 2019

I think it's the standard non compete that everyone at amazon signs

Apple blurf Dec 26, 2019

What exactly does it say?

Considering so many people here on Blind moved from Amazon to different places and not one person complained about being stopped, idk, I guess it only matters if you are important enough?

Apple blurf Dec 26, 2019

Why sign something as ridiculous as that, even if they won’t or can’t enforce it?

Tableau @maythforc Dec 26, 2019

Without signing it there is no job for you at Amazon

JPMorgan Chase LXkU65 OP Dec 26, 2019

Great indicator of what is to come

Apple blurf Dec 27, 2019

Now that Amazon owns Whole Foods you won’t be able to work at Albertsons after this.

JPMorgan Chase LXkU65 OP Dec 27, 2019

That's fine I was gonna go to trader Joe's anyway

Northrop Grumman anon0110 Dec 27, 2019

Typical non compete in my industry is not working on the same exact product for a year at a different company. When I left to work for a competitor I worked on a different product that needed the same domain knowledge since they knew about the agreement.

Apple blurf Dec 27, 2019

Once I was offered an employment agreement with a non compete. I crossed out that paragraph, signed it and returned it and still got the job. People should just refuse to sign non competes like that. If you don’t think they will ever enforce it anyway, then they should be ok with removing it from the agreement.

McKinsey bummR Dec 27, 2019

Uhh you can do that ?

Apple blurf Dec 27, 2019

I did for a startup. Not making this up. I wouldn’t want to work for a company that requires a non compete like that. Honestly I’m shocked that anyone would sign away their right to future employment. Did common sense die while I wasn’t looking?

Microsoft viper23679 Nov 23, 2021

Previous Amazon employee here, left to Microsoft for an entirely different role in a different product group. They still tried to enforce the non compete on me. It didn’t work but definitely jaded my view of the company.

Sophos aazk24 Jan 10, 2022

Do you mind sharing how they tried to enforce it after you've left?

Amazon Adviceplz1 May 14, 2022

Did it work when they tried to enforce it?
