I have currently have new grad offers from Amazon and Microsoft. Compensation is about the same. AWS vs. Azure. Which opportunity would be better for learning and career progression?
Amazon only for the location
Amazon’s engineering practices are pretty solid. It can be kinda hit or miss at Microsoft. I’m not in Azure so idk how it is over there.
Yeah that’s what I’m somewhat concerned. I don’t know much about Azure’s culture. As for AWS, I would most likely go back to the team that I interned on which I really enjoyed.
Team fit is super important. If you already know the team and like it, you should 100% go back to AWS
Is Amazon promising you a AWS team? Last year they were not very flexible for new grads, they were not given options and assigned a team which had opening randomly.
They can’t promise anything technically until they do team placement which is like 2 months before start date. My manager from this summer said they should have 5+ open headcount and that there’s like a 95% chance that I’ll get back on the team. I was just going off of that.
So we couldn't bring an intern back to our team last year due to hiring freeze. He/She was given only one option in the end and the team was pretty boring. I am glad he/she ended up at one of the other FANGs and didn't join Amazon (had to interview last minute with other companies due to this). One of the best interns I have seen.
For same compensation, join Microsoft. If you want to focus on learnings, you can do it in your free time which would be plenty in Microsoft compared to Amazon.
That never happens dude
The comp will not be the same as 401k match at msft is waaayyy higher than amzn. Also msft pays for your healtcare, at amzn you have to pay your share. Also amzn 401k you won't be able to put the max because of the clawbacks.
Amazon
I heard AMZN gives only merit raises at review time if your on-hire grant hasn’t fully vested yet. While MSFT annual rewards are peanuts compared to FB/G, we’re also eligible for a cash bonus and (very small) stock grant.
Love seeing all the MS people saying nice things about Amazon meanwhile Amazon always is passive aggressive and talk shit abt MS
You mean the one post here from an Amazon person who says MSFT benefits are better such as the 401k and etc? Lol both are solid companies. I’d be happy to leave Amazon for MS if I got an offer, and I’m sure enough MS people who haven’t committed to retire at MS would do the same.
I am in MS , I worked in amazon too in the past , I also worked in unicorns - I believe what amazon taught me is the process and how strict adherence to it helps - with no regard to human growth or values (though it’s better than uber). Microsoft has been respectful of me as a person and values individuals - with the expectation of high performance too - it’s not a social service org, it’s a for profit company - like amazon
Learning/career progression go Amazon if you want to make friends and build a life in Seattle go microsoft I have worked at both. Pros/cons of each.
Thanks for the reply. At this stage I’m not too concerned about WLB or settling down in a specific location. I’m trying to focus on learning and building my skills in my first few years.
Same here. Microsoft’s W/L balance has been a lot better but I haven’t learned as much.
