Amazon pip

I am talking up offer for Sr. PM -T at Amazon. I am super worried if I can perform on the job and if I will be out on PIP. How long does amazon take to put some one on PIP? I have 2 kids and would be moving to Seattle for the job, so this is a big move for me. My current job is good and basically there is no pay bump moving into amazon. I am interested in the product role and looking forward to learn and execute as a PM. I am currently working as Strategy Director at Marketing services company. Offered TC - $240k ($150 base) 10 YOE

If you believe yourself to be bottom of the barrel honestly don't come to Amazon. It's a competitive place and the stress will kill you even if you never get PIP. Only the bottom 10 percent go on coaching plans and only half of those leave, so that's 1 in 20, but if you're going to live in constant fear that you are the bottom 5% it's not great for you If you think you're good and want to benchmark yourself against smart people then come.

Finally someone that says it for how it is. My friends talk shit about amazon and don’t understand why I’m joining. I want the competition. I want to be surrounded by people that are pushing hard too.

If you want to work with smartest people go to Google. If you want to see who can row on the slave ship for more hours every week go to Amazon. If you want the $$$ work with smart people go to the other FANGs.

Why would you move with family without a pay bump?

Few reasons - 1. Always interested in Product role and this is a good opportunity at big brand name company 2. Eventually want to grow and there are growth opportunities in tech vs in media companies 3. Want to challenge my self in a competitive environment - this of course is the reason I asked the question

It does not look like you want to challenge yourself, what’s the real reason?

Not worth it imo. Stay where you are and enjoy the time you have with your kids. Why leave an already great situation to go to Amazon and that with 0 TC increase?

It will be a bad move

Do it. Build your career. You can bond with your kids in retirement.

This is bad advice.

Why move if there’s no pay bump? A lot of risk

Thanks for the thoughts. But what does it take for someone to get Pip at Amazon. And does it happen once a year or more frequently?

Amazon RLRq11 Mar 9, 2019

It can happen anytime. There is no time period.

Seattle? Not a good place for kids. Rains mostly and the weather isn’t that good as well.

Google LdJm16 Mar 9, 2019

I'm curious if you're taking from experience. I've lived in Bay Area and Seattle, with kids, and think that Seattle is by far a much better place to raise family.

Live in Seattle currently and totally hate the gloomy weather and rain all the time.
