——— update ———— I was told that my profile was more suitable for engineering roles and I could apply to those positions. I was not rejected but didn’t get an offer for this position. ——————————— Interviewed for Senior Design Technologist L6 for two locations. 1 hour portfolio presentation to all of them. Then interviewed with 5. Out of 5, one interviewer had a bad attitude. She read multiple questions at me, I had to ask if I should take notes because I can’t remember the questions. She was rude overall like no eye contact, dug into my answers in a hostile way. At some point she said “I’m gonna stop right here.” Unfortunately this entitled person was the manager of the team that is hiring. I don’t really know what to think. (Interviewees were from her location, one person from the other city joined the call for the portfolio presentation) Bar raiser was very kind, he liked me and even gave me advice / tips for upcoming interviews. I think others were impressed by the work I have demonstrated. Do you think I will be able to get an offer in this case? If I get a 80% pass do I still have a chance? I definitely do not want to work for this manager but I still want to get an offer for the other location.
Why would you want an offer?!? I think I would hang up before them.
I might consider the other location. If not, I could use the offer as leverage for another company I am about to get an offer for next week.
You need to report this interviewer. This is where you ask yourself, if one hour with this person was so stressful, whet happens when you have deal with them for years? Look at other options and most importantly let the recruiter know about this and give them a piece of your mind. Yes, interviewing does not seem like a level playing field. But trust me, it really is!
Do you think they really care? I mean, she is the manager of the team.
Amazon interviewers unfortunately are not consistent and can ask whatever / behave how they want. Amazon HR is also notoriously bad / doesn’t care about applicants and I doubt it will help your chances reporting this interviewer (just my personal opinion). I had an Amazon interviewer end an interview 20 minutes early though and I still got through. Good luck!
No, it wasn’t :)
Indian lady?
Sorry, but I’ve seen Managers (or interviewers) do that when they’ve already made up their mind to not hire the person. I hope I’m wrong, good luck!
I thought so, too. I hope she alone can not influence the final outcome for the other location. Never had a interview before where I could be considered for multiple locations.
Amazon interviews the hiring manager and bar raiser have to agree. They are the two people whos rating count. Unfortunately.
Thanks. I read others’ comments saying that Amazon is actually not a great place to work and your happiness very much depend on who your boss is.
I have been in similar situations with other companies. Hate to say it, but you probably didn't get the job. The job of that 'bar raiser' is to make you feel more comfortable, but ultimately it's up to the hiring manager and her team to make that judgement call. Complaining to HR doesn't give you points - if anything, it may be considered a big negative and it may make it worse. Yes she was rude, but nowadays companies don't seem to be very patient with people that aren't fits for their group. At this point, you have to hope that you can apply for other jobs in a year or so. If you did especially badly, it may take 2 years. There are other jobs out there that are better - you just have to look for them. Best of luck to you!
I agree that I have little chance of getting the job. Only if the bar raiser (he was a manager of DT’s - not some manager like her) convinces her, I would have a shot. But she doesn’t look like a person who would value others’ opinions. Long live leadership principles! Actually after the interview I understood that what they need is not talent at all but someone to take to business meetings like an expert. Also I felt a bit discriminated because of my nationality, too. It wasn’t a good fit for sure. But the job description is deceiving, it was not clear what they were actually looking for and I have everything the job desc asks for. Thank you for your advice, I will skip complaining to HR and keep my mouth shut.
