Amazon vs Apple

Jan 20 10 Comments

Joined Amazon 3 months ago, Now got an offer from Apple from the place where I lived previously with 10k lower compensation. But listening to lot of opinions between Amazon vs Apple. WLB is the major argument.

Pros & cons w amazon
- Team is good and seems healthy but hiring so many folks.
- Good compensation but less WLB
- Not too many friends here, cold weather

Pros & cons w Apple
- AMZ - 150k vs APL - 140k
- Good friends in the city, good weather, good lifestyle
- Apple delayed my offer by 4 months(interviewed before AMZ)

Go to Apple, sounds like you'll be happier there, that's easily worth 10k a year.

Gotta factor in slightly higher COL and tax though. My thought is it’s how close the “friends” OP has really are.

I would say go wherever friends are. My question is you said good friends in “the city” does that mean SF? Cus they aren’t going to be hanging out with you much if you’re in the South Bay. You will be just as lonely there unless they’re in Silicon Valley

It’s not SF, friends as in hanging out in the weekends, going out on trips.

You are missing a big point here. Your tc remains same at amazon for the level but apple tc is just starting there and will grow every year with generous refreshers

If I leave amazon in less than an year, then down the line after few years if I might want to rejoin amazon for some $$$ reason. Can they rehire me. How’s their rehiring policy ?

Lol true! If not $ then some other reason, if I want to rejoin amazon later in my life, then I’m wondering how my decision of leaving amazon in 4 months would impact it

Apple has generous refreshers that will make your Amazon compensation pale over time.

Amazon doesn’t blacklist people - they need people because of their attrition rate. Exception - if you’re fired for performance reasons then this won’t apply.

If you don’t want to burn bridges, I can recommend one of two things:

    a) Cite a personal reason to Amazon and apologise (and mean it - hiring a candidate involves time and money) and leave for Apple

    b) If you can convince Apple to push back your joining date, get that done. I don’t think this is a good strategy though - because you’d just be eating up headcount and the manager will most likely fill your position with someone else.
