What do you think about warehouse workers who can’t even have bathroom breaks timely. With advancement of technology I am afraid companies like Amazon will put people into dire work environment. Our achievement in the last 200 years in labor practices may retreat significantly if other companies follow Amazon’s lead. Microsoft already did that by placing on call duty without extra pay or day off. https://www.seattletimes.com/business/amazon/under-pressure-afraid-to-take-bathroom-breaks-inside-amazons-fast-paced-warehouse-world/
They can hold for 8 hours
Fuck Amazon and their life sucking frugal culture.
Opportunity for a book: How to be productive amazon warehouse worker. Rule number 1: no food or drinks 2 hours before your shift. Rule number 2: no food or drinks during your shift. Rules 1 and 2 also save you money.
And the rest of the book can be on how not to kill yourself
Very soon all amazon warehouses would have robots and delivery will be done by drones
It really sucks. When we (at Corp) get hired we have to do Amazon Experience Week (though lots of devs or their managers work very hard to get out of it). We have to go work in an FC somewhere in the country for a week doing all the various floor jobs. It's back breaking, incredibly stressful, enjoyable, rewarding, and really drives home what the foundation of our company is. Yes it sucks. Data is used to get as much efficiency as possible out of each and every worker. Down to the exact location of bathrooms. There are tons of improvements that could and will be made. That's one of the reasons for AEW. We get to write white papers on how to make it better and push them through. Warehouse work is tough. No matter which company it is. I think we use data more than other companies do. It's a constant balance and rebalance. We get better with more data and exposure like this.
I think your experience was rewarding in the same way that sleeping in a tent in the woods is rewarding. But it's only rewarding because you know you will be going back to your cushy home (corporate job)
Was it not rewarding for you? I learned so much. Made an actual difference in the lives of those working there longer term. Really understood the day to day of the people who work these jobs. Yes it was awesome to not do it forever. But I got a lot out of it and would do it again in a heartbeat. It's a job that must be done. We are just trying to take a data based approach to it and get the most out of the associates. Why wouldn't we? Of course satisfaction and attrition are data points.
