Week 6 here. All other team members comments are not rude and are suggestive and helpful. Only this person's comments seem rude and targeting like trying to enforce his superiority. This tone of comments would be considered rude and offensive in my previous company and not sure how to manage or respond here! Jokes aside, any practical or useful tips/suggestions would be really helpful.
Get thicker skin. It’s not personal.
That depends. It's not about thicker skin, I've noticed that condescending attitude a lot specially with people from a certain country that if you dare mention you'll be flagged. I've had it happen to me when I was new except I'm not afraid to check someone real quick.
When you are new, most probably your code deserved some beating.
If you have a CR that you can pick and go over ( which has his rude remarks in it) - take a couple minutes to go over each of them . Analyze if any of his remarks have actual improvements that you could make . Then., step up and compose your responses accordingly. As you do that - be very objective . Don’t take anything personally. Just respond if the proposed improvement works or not. Doing this will show him that you do not fear him and he needs to be careful in making suggestions and not just boss around.
Just talk to the person who is having rude comments. Most of the time, it’s not personal. Tell them that the comments are deemed as rude. If I was the commenter, I’d probably want to know when I’m coming off as a jerk. If the person is genuinely trying to help, they should acknowledge and try to change. However, there are a lot of jerks in Amazon so you might just be interactive with one :/
Trial by combat
I call people's work shit all the time. Then I show them not be shit. Take the criticism, ask how to fix it. Your superiors are there for you - helping the tea. succeed is their job, you are part of the team.
Lol. Clearly you’ve never worked at Amazon.
Nope. Turned down two FAANG roles because I prefer the better coast. If me as a lead would ruffle anyone's panties for calling their work shit, I don't want to work there. So, leads not there for you or they just pip ya? At the prices they pay ... I'd be sending anyone who didn't shit gold for me right to the door.
Set up a 1:1 with this person and sort out the conflicts. Don't argue too much in CR comments. Beware that when switching teams within Amazon in future, your new team will look at your CR history. Lots of noise in CR comments might hurt you.
That's a valid point and I had no idea about that. Thanks! This person is from sister team and not sure how to say.." hey you comments seem rude to me. Do you mind changing the tone"!
Did you consider a possibility that you suck and your code is 💩?
On the internet I sometimes quote things more politely. If they say "this is slow as shit" I might say: >This could have performance implications It's ok, the data size is always <5
Tell him to disagree and commit to him being a total ahole
You dont seem to be exhibiting one LP very well... Have a backbone, dude!
So these are common and can always stand up for our approach?
Its common for you to standup for yourself and not take things personally. Unless this person is attacking you personally or doing something completely unprofessional, its just part of working with people who isnt always sunshine and rainbows, so have a backbone and grow thicker skin. Take his suggestions and implement them if they will benefit you and/or the team.
