TC: 115,000 YOE: 2.5 Long time lurker first time poster! I received an inclined to offer from Amazon. I spoke to three managers in the Ads org. I liked them all. I’m free to pick the team that I like. The only hang up is that they are all pure Java/ Scala jobs and I’m a Rubyist/JavaScripter by trade. I’ve done a little Java, but I’m concerned about expectations. Each manager who I’ve spoken to knows I’m a newb at Java, and they’ve all indicated I’d have 2-3 months to get up to speed. I’ve even spoken to other Amazonians who said they had 6 months to really learn a new language. The issue is I don’t know what “up to speed is” for a FANG. I currently work at a large company, so I have some idea, but a FANG is another level of difficulty. This is my first FANG. My assumption is that I’ll be surrounded by Java ninjas, so I’m worried about being PIP’ed at 6 months if I’m not up to snuff. For those of you that are Amazonians, what was your experience navigating Amazon in the first two-six months? I also have the choice of a Ruby/ Python job in another city with Amazon. Would it be an easier transition with the Ruby/Python job, or am I just needlessly worried about the Java positions (which I’d rather take). I want to be a polyglot, and the Ads stuff is in NYC (where I’d rather be). I’d love any advice you can give. -
Fuc java ninjas.. Most of the code I have seen is far below industry standards within and outside my org (few teams have awesome standard though) Just be nice with manager and seniors SDEs and u won't need to worry about tech stuff
Couldn’t agree more !
You’ll be spending most of your time doing operational work, so you’ll have plenty of time to learn the language.
Wow they lowballed you man :(
Tc seems weird? What is your title? Sde ?
SDE2 and 180 for the Amazon position. Should have clarified.
Is 180 total including stocks and signing Bonus? If so, that's very low for l5
Hey Guys. Sorry, I meant my current TC is 115. I’m still at my old employer. I asked for 180 as SDE2 and they said yes.
To clarify on TC, the recruiter asked for a ballpark before I spoke to the managers. No offer letter or negotiations yet.
What was your answer? Amazon recruiters are notorious for asking this! They ask to lowball you.
I said 180, but I assume I’m not held to that. There is no offer letter or even team picked yet.
Continue to be open to your manager about your progress on learning and reach out to teammates for help, if you’re not up to speed but your taking steps to get there that helps
