I'm in my 6th year in America as a Green Card/Permanent Resident and eligible to apply for Naturalization in USA. Though I know i'm safe and legal, I can't help but overthink and get paranoid about these immigration issues in this country. I'm afraid that I'd spend over $750 just for nothing...? Any thoughts?
I applied in March and still waiting. It used to take about 3 months. Definitely something changed...
No. It took 7 months back in 2007. I hear it is about a year now.
Be prepared to wait longer. 14-18 months.
Do it. You don't want to get rfes or deported for petty mistakes made in green card renewal applications.
Like what?
I am in the same boat. Just nervous with all the “issues”.
I wouldn’t do this. Green Card is OK. Guido van Rossum is on Green Card for all his years.
Yeah. I want to buy land in the Philippines (my current citizenship). Can't buy land if I let go of my citizenship there.
Lol, the Philippines allows dual citizenship. Source: am Filipino
Don't you want to be represented. Voting and having your opinion counted is the key thing. US government will and should care for citizen first and then others. Do it. Otherwise don't complain about changing rules etc later
Yes, I agree. That's why I want to be naturalized. Just wondering if now is the perfect time to do it or wait.
Also learn about US Constitution and on what basis and ideas this country was formed. You will feel proud and responsible for keeping the ideas alive.
It’s possible you could get arrested, and then deported, which can reduce your TC. If you’re a US citizen, they can’t deport you.
In my case, luckily i was paranoid about denaturalization due to false info, and with q26, I submitted everything, including speeding tickets. But risk of getting deported with GC > naturalized citizen. Regardless, what a waste of resources. How are they going to figure out who lied? They’ll just pick people they don’t want.
I applied at my tenth year of green card because I figured that i was paying more for visas to travel places and also every ten years you gotta apply for green card renewal again which still costs hundreds of dollars. If you expect to live here another twenty years you might as well get it over with and become a citizen. Easier to travel to places and no more green card renewals needed. Only annoying thing is having to respond to jury summons.
Good point. I am going to apply for naturalization. Just wondering if this is a good time to do it. My GC won't expire in 3.5years. Hope the administration by that time's better.
$750 is nothing. You are gonna pay tax for your global income and properties
I don't have any properties nor get any type of income overseas.
750 to become a citizen?!
Yes.
