Any Americans on Blind working in Ireland (or have worked there for extended periods)? If so, please share the pros and cons (aside form dual taxation). I have dual citizenship and thinking about relocation for my sons: one of them is also dual citizen and I'm working to get the other his Irish citizenship so it's conceivable they could attend university there as citizens. TIA.
By descent?
Yup
I think the worst part is the taxation. Otherwise, general taxation is higher and things cost more there but you've got much lower healthcare and secondary education costs. No language barrier there either. You and your son also have access to the rest of the EU for residency or education. I also have an EU passport in addition to US but have never lived there. Given the way things are going here in the US, it's a good option to have.
Thanks for the input. Your last point is exactly why I am looking at this - not so much for me (and I'd have to get my wife a visa), but for them to have an option in the future. If they're living there already, it's not inconceivable to stay or learn a language and experience other EU nations. We'll also definitely go for an extended vacation at some point so they'll know the place and meet some relatives.
Unlike the US, spouses of EU citizens can reside in any EU country with them w/o a visa (I forget the term for this...). There's some residency paperwork you have to file and they then get a Irish residency card. I have an American friend living in Italy married to an Italian for like 15 years and she never got her Italian citizenship. I think there is also some post brexit plan of the Irish having some sort of free movement to/from the UK because of the Northern Ireland backstop issue.
