After being an Amazonian for 7+ years, I decided to explore other opportunities. I got a call from Facebook, cleared 2 PS, and was quickly invited for an onsite. One entire round was based on behavioral/leadership questions where I did something strange. I responded to all of the interviewer’s questions by first tieing it to Amazon LP, thoroughly explaining that LP and how we stick to it, and then gave a scenerio based on a STAR format. Interviewer kept a poker face all the time but I think my responses were pretty good (I can sense that as I have interviewed 150+ candidates during my tenure with Amazon). 1) Did I lowered my stake by displaying too much of Amazon at Facebook? 2) Does anyone face this kind of situation? Please advise. Awaiting response from FB. Finger crossed. TC: 330K, SDE-III, Seattle
Why would you tie them into LPs at a Facebook interview?
When in Rome, be a Roman!
I think you meant: when in Rome, do as Romans do
Rome is built in one day
They’d have a good laugh during debrief. You certainly entertained them. Good for you!
Facebook got insulted by Ex-Google Tech leas so I wouldn’t be surprised if they feel insulted by too much Amazonianship
Its strange that fb felt like that. I usually appreciate if a candidate is providing great examples focusing on how they achieve results by using their so called principles
But did you move fast and break things at Amazon doe
FB culture is very different. If went really heavy on the LPs that might be a bit of a turn off. But for an SWE interview tech is most important
if you aced the coding and system design, there is nothing to worry about...
How much time did they take to provide your interview results ?
Overall i think that Amazon's LPs are a pretty good framework for answering behavioural questions. I think it makes sense to demonstrate your understanding of LPs through your own experience at Amz, but it might be coming off as a bit tone deaf if you don't tie it back to the actual values of the company you're interviewing for. I'd be wondering if you had researched FB's values if you never mapped LPs to FB.
Amazon’s framework around leadership is very focused as compared to FB’s LPs. While the purpose of these LPs are to achieve professional discipline and hence professional success, I dont see much issues here for using Amazon’s LP. I agree with you that I should have used Fb’s LPs too but I believe I am over thinking.
