Tech in Boston

Feb 13 14 Comments

I'm thinking of moving to the Boston area for family reasons and was wondering what the tech scene was like there. It appears all the big tech companies have offices. Are they doing interesting work? How does pay differ from the Bay Area / WA? If it matters, I'm in the ML space (applied/research).

Also, any leads on where I should be looking for housing? It seems like most of the offices are in Cambridge, but SFH there is quite expensive (I have kids, so schools also matter).

  • TC? Pay is probably 10%-20% less but you should check the data points on levels.fyi. Also if you are hybrid consider spots like Acton, Bedford or Westford

MSFT has Microsoft research here.. there’s a couple of teams that I interviewed with who do ML work for azure clients. There’s also a responsible ai team.

And there’s so many ML teams from Amazon and apple here. Both in Boston and Cambridge areas.

Besides that there’s google (maps and search and some other teams), Facebook (computer vision, etc), there’s Spotify (big base, lot of teams).

And there’s many more companies and startups

    There’s enough tech here.

Let me know if you want referral for amazon. There’s Alexa teams (conversational AI teams and some LM teams) and AWS (security ML team).

Boston is cheaper than NYC but it's getting up there.

Most big tech there are pure research arms recruiting PhDs out of MIT and Harvard with some people doing other stuff. It's usually stuff that doesn't require a org collab, as that kind of stuff tends to be put in SF or NYC.

Cambridge is basically Boston. Boston has Boston Latin, which is one of the elite public schools a la Stuy/TJ/Mira Loma/Palo Alto. If you want to send your kids to boarding, Exeter and Andover are nearby

Kendall Square has a great tech scene, was initially allocated for NASA HQ by JFK and then LBJ came along and moved it to his home state in Huston. Should have been “Cambridge, we have a problem”. Google has many 1000s of employees and is in the end stages of constructing a new building https://www.pickardchilton.com/work/google-cambridge

FYI Cambridge and Boston are different cities with historically quite different political will and leadership that impacts public education. Boston is a little cheaper if you are in the right place (Charlestown, Allston, Jamaica Plain are less expensive than other parts of Boston; Jamaica Plain is much more vibrant and racially diverse and overall Boston is quite racially-segregated)
