Why is the United States, as a whole becoming so anti-immigrant. I understand that the US wants the ‘best and the brightest’, but is it not true that there are many people who don’t fit in the ‘best and the brightest’ category but can still be really productive and overall beneficial members of American society? Why push them away? The US does not lack resources. The US does not lack space. I can imagine a USA with 450-500 million population, doing great.
I don’t believe the US is becoming anti immigrant. The issue is with illegal immigration and unchecked immigration. The left makes it seem as if there is rising xenophobia for political reasons. There is a massive drug problem right now and a porous border is largely responsible for that. It’s not fair to legal immigrants to protect illegal immigrants so strongly. There is also a significant population of people who want to enter the US specifically to kill as many Americans as possible. Many on the left think having wide open borders can only benefit us. But we see the effects of that approach, as well as what is going on in Europe with immigration and that is both unrealistic and dangerous.
Right after Trump won , my legal Indian friend had abuses hurled at him and asked to go back. You can say it is about illegal immigration but us legal folks bear the brunt of nativism regularly. There is rising xenophobia. Don’t sugarcoat it .
If you think xenophobia is rising, why do you seem to blame this on Americans rather than the islamists who continually attempt to kill westerners? Or the Mexican cartels who pump drugs and border violence into the country? Wouldn't you consider those the sources of the problem rather than irrational distrust?
The economy is changing and many jobs are no longer needed but there is a need in other specialities. Since many middle aged american workers aren't willing to re-train they prefer to think that it is immigrants fault they no longer have a job. They do not want to admit immigrants came here for the jobs they didn't want to take. On the other hand there is some truth to that with Indian bodyshops supplying hundreds of thousands of mediocre tech workers (not including those who are on L visa). It helps to bring down the costs (they often pay a senior engineer a junior's salary and jeep them on a visa leash for many years). And obviously Americans sense that it is done to cut costs rather than bring the resources that US is lacking. On the other hand without them US companies may have outsourced more in order to cut the costs, at least this may money stays in the local economy.
Yeah, is it a good idea to think “I’m American and by the virtue of being American, I’m entitled to a higher pay than the Indian/Chinese/Vietnamese?” Shouldn’t the average American be more productive than the average Indian/Chinese/Vietnamese by a similar proportion to the pay gap?
Darell Issa has a bill to raise minimum H1B salary to 100K. Blaming Indian companies when the law has a min of 60 K seems silly. Call your reps and get the min raised to 100K.
Well seasonal (harvest) workers do the work Americans don’t want to do, considering they are likely paid way less that what an American would want to be paid. This wouldn’t be a problem if Americans were willing to pay more for their produce. While the following doesn’t apply to every student in America but most likely aren’t interested in the technology field due to the volatility of the industry, sexual harassment, bullying and discrimination. Add the fact that perhaps most American students expect to be handed great jobs with little effort therefore don’t work that hard and are then passed up by companies for foreign workers. Or perhaps students work so hard at making ends meet and get mired in so much debt they can’t focus on being the best and brightest while in school which leads to this anti-immigrant sentiment. Companies can also pay less for foreign talent or is that not true?
The majority of Americans welcome immigration but the minority (Trump) is in power so expect declines in immigration for the next 7 years.
Legal immigration is welcome. This is your opinion and not representative of all Americans.
That’s a lie . Trump wants to cut legal migration.
The Bay Area does lack resources. So many homeless on the street. The Bay Area does lack spaces. Even a small house is sold for more than $1m.
What do you think is a better option for this specific problem? A) Having immigrants beholden to their employer for their legal status B) Economically liberated immigrants who will make rational decisions in their self-interest? (Moving to a lower COL place)
Imagine if someone like Jeff Bezos decided to open an Amazon HQ in an area not in CA. It would leave to infrastructure investments, more money pouring in, labor market improving, etc. It would be a prime example of the private sector doing something the public sector cannot do for the greater good. Of course, this probably doesn’t make business sense to amazon, so it would be hard to convince a private Corp to do such a thing.
USA needs immigrants but with the trump era the thought process has been changed or manipulated. Immigration and immigrants are being looked up as second class outsiders who are somehow less American and are responsible for all the problems. It’s very much visible around the country as it was never before. This isn’t going to survive though and is a phase (good or bad depends on how left or right leaning you are) If trump is serious he should hire American only and make his own products in USA, that’s leading by example. If he can ever do so we can expect other corporations to follow somehow but last I checked corporate are for profit so they do what makes them look at the stock market. Push all immigrant techies out of country and see how jobs will he sent out of USA hurting the economy. There isn’t a simple good solution so someone got to take hit with one policy vs the other. Cheers
It ls all BS. America is not becoming anti-immigrants. I'm an immigrant myself and I dont feel unwelcomed in this country or threatened by the current administration. These are all fake news spread by Goerge Soros the evil, and his Antifa fan boys who are trying to promote complete anarchy in this country. Dont buy into the leftists bullshit. If the sun doesnt shine from their ass, they call it the moon.
Happy that you haven’t faced the rising anti immigrant sentiment. Some of us have seen and suffered from it. So if you didn’t discount anything you haven’t seen personally , that will be helpful.
Which anti-immigrant sentiment have you been facing while working in your ivory tower at FB ?
Trump is touting a merit based system, so the best and the brightest will have preferred visa status, the issue is not legal immigrants it's the illegals who are taking the few blu collar jobs left... Having said that, I also believe that cracking down on employers who hire illegals will help solve the problem... After all supply is dictated by demand.
No, the term is NOT "undocumented immigrant." Stop with that BS already. They are here ILLEGALLY.
