Anti-Immigrant

Nov 26, 2017 106 Comments

Why is the United States, as a whole becoming so anti-immigrant. I understand that the US wants the ‘best and the brightest’, but is it not true that there are many people who don’t fit in the ‘best and the brightest’ category but can still be really productive and overall beneficial members of American society? Why push them away? The US does not lack resources. The US does not lack space. I can imagine a USA with 450-500 million population, doing great.

I don’t believe the US is becoming anti immigrant. The issue is with illegal immigration and unchecked immigration. The left makes it seem as if there is rising xenophobia for political reasons.

There is a massive drug problem right now and a porous border is largely responsible for that. It’s not fair to legal immigrants to protect illegal immigrants so strongly. There is also a significant population of people who want to enter the US specifically to kill as many Americans as possible. Many on the left think having wide open borders can only benefit us. But we see the effects of that approach, as well as what is going on in Europe with immigration and that is both unrealistic and dangerous.

The wall India is building along its border with Bangladesh is simply to appease its own stupids (the ones who can vote). They know the wall won’t stop determined Bangladeshis

The economy is changing and many jobs are no longer needed but there is a need in other specialities. Since many middle aged american workers aren't willing to re-train they prefer to think that it is immigrants fault they no longer have a job. They do not want to admit immigrants came here for the jobs they didn't want to take. On the other hand there is some truth to that with Indian bodyshops supplying hundreds of thousands of mediocre tech workers (not including those who are on L visa). It helps to bring down the costs (they often pay a senior engineer a junior's salary and jeep them on a visa leash for many years). And obviously Americans sense that it is done to cut costs rather than bring the resources that US is lacking. On the other hand without them US companies may have outsourced more in order to cut the costs, at least this may money stays in the local economy.

@Smsht, //The current system is not fair towards large countries with multi ethnic population (like Canada) and also makes it unfairly easier for people born in smaller countries with the same ethnicity as a large country hitting the cap.//
The current system also unfairly favor people from tiny splintered European countries with similar ethnicity.
Hence, IMO, treating all of EU as a single country would be fairer implementation of the ideal you stated. Such a policy would also have the benefit of drawing attention to the racial bias of such policies. It also remains an open question if such an ideal needs to be implemented for the 14% skilled immigrants.

c!5c0, small European countries with the same ethnicity don't hit the quota altogether. Largest countries like UK, Germany or France have pretty distinct ethnicities. Also this should warm your heart: "The share of Europeans among the total U.S. foreign-born population plunged from 75 percent in 1960 to 11 percent in 2014, as immigration from Latin America and Asia surged to new prominence".

Trump is anti illegal immigrants but fake news drop the “illegal” word and report as though he hates all immigrants. I’m puzzled as why so many educated people fall for this.

It’s always fun when Trump undermines his team or supporters by tweeting something contradictory. In this case thanks for tweeting some fake Islamophobic videos proving the point that xenophobia is on the rise. Can’t wait for Kushner’s guilty plea next. So excited !!!!

It could be argued that chain migration is exploited by Mexicans. If Republicans weren’t racist and xenophobic, maybe just maybe Mexicans would vote Republican. Look at yourself in the mirror and admit your faults.

As others have said it's not becoming anti immigrant, but what others haven't said is it has always been xenophobic.

Study up on the history of the United States. We are culturally xenophobic. Look at how in the 1800s the following people were treated in the US
    German immigrants
    Irish immigrants
    Chinese immigrants
    Japanese immigrants

Look to ww1 and why we didn't join the fray till the very last minute. Have the same look at ww2.

Look at our long standing relationship with Mexico. Maybe the Spanish American War? How about in the early 1900s how the first out break of swine flu was blamed viciously on those south of our boarder.

Heck, I am sure you know about the Japanese internment camps in ww2, but drop the skin color and look up the German American internment camps.

It's not even racism, that's the funny common misconception, it's fear of outsiders and it runs rife in the US, it always has. And the first thing that goes wrong they are the easy target for whatever reason, usually due to culture clash.

Tl;Dr America has always been xenophobic because history is an endless waltz.

It ls all BS. America is not becoming anti-immigrants. I'm an immigrant myself and I dont feel unwelcomed in this country or threatened by the current administration. These are all fake news spread by Goerge Soros the evil, and his Antifa fan boys who are trying to promote complete anarchy in this country. Dont buy into the leftists bullshit. If the sun doesnt shine from their ass, they call it the moon.

Well some white dudes in Richmond California hurled slurs, pulled a sikh man from his car, beat him and cut his hair earlier this year. Minutemen “protested” immigrants in a South Asian neighborhood in Fremont - but if a tech dude doesn’t face hostility, then I guess nothing’s going on.

Most of these concerns come from American SJWs virtue signaling. Legal immigrants have no problems seeing through the fake news fear mongering. They were never brainwashed by the PC propaganda, and many actually support Trump immigration reform proposal. Sorry SJW libs, legal immigrants don’t need you to feel sorry for them. Now go hug the illegals but don’t lump them with the legal ones. And they still have to go back.

Why would legal migrants want to cut their own parents the chance to become US permanent residents?

Chain migration is legal whether you like it or not. If it’s being cut, legal migration is being cut. Don’t change facts to fit your story.

The legal immigration system is very inefficient, as it rewards chain migration, visa lottery, quotas for countries, and mass import of lower skilled workers. The RAISE bill is a great improvement.

Trump is touting a merit based system, so the best and the brightest will have preferred visa status, the issue is not legal immigrants it's the illegals who are taking the few blu collar jobs left... Having said that, I also believe that cracking down on employers who hire illegals will help solve the problem... After all supply is dictated by demand.
