The last few days I have been really anxious about the advancements in AI. I have been programming now for almost 15 years and I still love it. I have always seen writing code as a craft that took years and years to really master and get good at. There was always something new to learn and improve on. New languages, frameworks, patterns, tricks, books, etc. Yesterday I played with gpt-4 and seeing the results left me with a sense of dread and sadness. The bot was able to understand a complex prompt and write almost perfect code. With a few adjustments the code looked even better. I am not too worried about the AI replacing swes because I understand that writing code is just a small part of what we do and to fully automate an engineer you would pretty much need an AGI that could automate every single job out there. I am sad an anxious because I feel like the craft that I've spent the majority of my life getting good at and perfecting as now being commoditzed. I am sure that artists and people in other creative fields are having similar feelings. How are all feelings about these advances? TC: 350
There was a Go match between AlphaGo and the best Go player in China. The Chinese Go player lost in the end and he cried badly. The craft and art we are proud of, the creativity we’re proud of, AI will be able to do it and do better.
Check out GPT-4 performance on leetcode and codeforces. Pretty meh. An awesome tool to explore the space of code that has been written already and adjacent (among many other things), which is why you feel like it outputs decent code. Something completely new = hallucination. That being said, a lot of code writing is reinventing the wheel so it’s great if it helps improve on that practice.
I for one am excited to be part of the AI revolution. We’ll eventually be replaced by a greater intelligence, and we deserve it for the muck we’ve made of our entire civilization and biosphere.
And the AI would treat the biosphere better right? 🙄
The AI doesn’t need the biosphere. The AI would develop the perfect infrastructure for its continued propagation across the galaxy. We need the biosphere and can’t seem to do a thing to preserve it because our social systems are so broken. same will be true about trying to prevent the rise of intelligent machines
You can blame your fellow SWEs. You are making yourselves obsolete. Good job 👏.
Facts. They are rushing towards the finish line of their own demise
Coding is the least interesting part of engineering. I welcome the new tools, they will significantly boost productivity
coding skills will remain important, because code needs to be working and easily readable. but coding is going to be more about writing prompts and then formatting ai-generated code
I think the rise of AI will bring a new era of productivity and creativity in engineering. I would get familiar with AI as soon as possible and start using it as a tool to build things you couldn't before. If you really think your job can be replaced by AI then it probably should be. Eventually, the perfect society would be one where there are no jobs

A handcrafted Hermes costs 100 more than a machine made handbag (not the best example since it's also luxury but you get the idea). Hand made furniture costs at least twice as much as furniture on Wayfair. This helps me sleep at night
Lol what 😂 apples and oranges my friends, but hey whatever makes you sleep at night
This is responding to op's last paragraph. I work in the creative field
