Hi there, Been in consultative software sales for 10 years + 3 years of project management experience in a UI/UX consultancy and I'm looking to shift to Product Management, preferably in a more technical capacity (I'm more of a sales engineer, well versed in programming languages, ux research, prototyping and delivery). I have helped to ideate, plan, design (I say this as in designing high fidelity wire frames), and manage development time frames, expectations and requirements, and I am also very comfortable with road map tools like aha, JIRA, Asana, etc, as well as design tools like InVision What are some other tools that I can learn and play with to set myself aside from other candidates with both recruiters and hiring managers? Any recommendations for YT videos or content to read/watch to prepare me for the shift? I'm applying to positions where I'm competing with people that have 4+ years of dedicated PM experience, but the internal recruiters are still responding to my apps (I'm guessing they like the sales experience to be able to translate requirements from sales and clients to tech and vice versa), so I'm not necessarily discouraged, but I do want to prepare myself as much as possible to outshine those with the dedicated experience. Any advice, tools, or tips of the trade are super appreciated. I have nothing but respect for PMs and I hope to be in the role sooner rather than later. Thanks!
I’m considering the same transition as well from an SE role. There are good Reddit threads on this. I find it’s not so much the toolkit but the product sense and ability to sell your ideas internally and then prioritize ruthlessly to execute on a roadmap that makes sense in the market. Wondering if OP has made the transition yet?
