How is it like working at OfferUp as a SWE? Seems like a lot of negative comments on blind but were mostly dated back to 2018. I know they went through some big changes in eng leadership (new CTO, etc.) Anyone can provide more up-to-date information?
@takeshi are you planning to go to OfferUp from Google??? 🙄
Everyone has different circumstances and I wouldn't considered OU if they cannot beat my current comp and better growth opportunity. Still want to fact check with folks here to make sure what they described aligns with the reliety, though. Especially when large part of the comp is stock options.
Okay, good luck 👍
Don’t! The management is toxic and revenue is flat for two years. eng team has 70% attrition rate for past 1 year. Our new CTO know nothing about technology. Vp hires 4 months ago just sent farewell email about 1 week ago. One director newly hired has harassed his direct reporters. Everything I said you can easily verify with your colleagues who is former ou.
Thanks dtuidtdit. Are you still at OU or already left?
Technology in ou actually is pretty good. Payment is not bad as a startup (not as good as google for sure). Value stopped growth for 2 years. And real problem is management. If you enjoy severe political battles and comfortable with extremely high attrition rate, ou is the right place for you.
People that built those all gone - existing people there (especially management) are walking death
Fun technical challenges, broad scope. Lots of politics. Poor leadership and no opportunity for advancement unless you’re willing to play their games and kiss a lot of ass. Until they wake up and get rid of the engineering leadership they have hired recently, I would stay away.
The bulk of the negative comments about OfferUp are coming from a group of ex-employees that were unhappy at OfferUp and were either pushed out or left with their friends that were pushed out. This group continues to blame “bad leadership” and “politics” for their own mistakes. I wouldn’t listen to those comments. Here’s what I’ll say: OfferUp did go through a rough patch within the engineering org in 2018. There was one team in particular where the team’s culture was toxic and lead to that team forming a bad opinion of the company and ultimately the majority leaving. Since then, we’ve hired a so-far impressive COO and CFO, and a CTO that has made big changes within the org that are seemingly positive. We’ve also hired new Directors of Engineering to give more structure to the org. There is a revitalized belief in the future of the company and we have since developed strong revenue streams that all have massive potential. In 2018 I would likely have told you to turn away from this company, yet now I think is a great time to join. The business has potential and the technical challenges are fun. I just wish our current employees actually posted on Blind, sad to see ex-employees spreading the untrue negativity.
Current OU employee. Can confirm. 2018 and early 2019 saw a lot of engineering attrition that now has trickled off. It seems like most of the exits now are poor performers being managed out. The benefit of this attrition has been a ton of fresh new ideas at all levels of engineering, less toxic engineering culture, and generally an increased happiness in the office. There is a lot of exciting work being done and a lot of room for impact now that these ex employees are gone.
Lol. The attrition rate is at least 50%. Ou do it on purpose? one of ou manager okr is to reach 50% attrition rate?
Current OU employees. I can confirm every words BOAW40 said is fake and it is typical Offerup: never admit mistake. Let me list some facts that you might be able to confirm by yourself. 1. Eng team has 50%-70% attrition rate, we have farewell email almost every Friday. From Q2, leadership team forbid people to sent farewell email because it has bad impact 2. There are 5+ eng join Google after Ou in 18/19. Work with them or ask their team members, you can make your own decision: they are good eng and ou doesn’t deserve them VS they should be fired 3. Ou stock price has not increased for two years. Profit is negative and revenue is flat.
We got new leadership team now. I thought we will have change. But no change. All politics game.

how do we feel about the future of work/tech?
Their app would be extremely easy to replicate. I don’t think they have anything that would prevent them from going under.
