Any other managers miss the simple pleasures of coding?

Been in the industry for a while. While I love managing teams and services and growing people...sometimes I find myself waxing nostalgic over taking apart a problem domain and writing a solution or a clever abstraction. Being so focused on a problem that day turned into night and then back to day with nary a stop but for the fundamentals.

Any other managers feel that way? What do you do to combat it?

Moved from Sr SDE to SDM about 5 years ago. I loved being a technical leader, solving the hardest problems and having close friendships with the team. As an SDM, you’re isolated. You can be friendly with the team but you’ll always be “the manager” from their perspective. It can incredibly lonely. Technically you’re written off a lot and there’s the assumption you’re not as technical as you really are, because you never get to show off your coding abilities in any level of depth. I definitely miss the simpler days, but I wouldn’t trade what I’ve gained in the process to go back. It’s so rewarding to build a team, care for their careers, see their excitement when they promote, celebrating their successes, and instilling the culture you’re passionate about.

After a certain level, senior ICs barely find time to code as well. But if you really want it then join a startup or smaller company and enjoy coding again

Every single day. It’s frustrating. I try to code occasionally on a big complex project just to keep in touch.

Yes, do miss simpler coding days. Lately just try hands on leet code to stay in touch and potentially help with future interviews (whenever that happens)
