Any self taught UX'ers out there?

I'm trying to transition into UX design from an animation/design/motion graphics position mainly doing simulated UI for Samsung commercials. I'm wondering how difficult it is to break into UX and if there are any great resources you guys used to teach yourselves outside of schooling? How did you get into UX?

Create a portfolio to demonstrate you've taught yourself the theory. Build a network to support you- find a mentor, go to UX meet ups, engage in conversations of design blogs or LinkedIn.

I'm a self-taught UXer. I consumed articles and books like a mad man, practiced my ass off and networked with other UXers. I also got a job as a UXer at a small company. So that helped.

Taking actual paying work with people who can appreciate your current set of talent is a good start. That's how I started. Truthfully, best decision I have ever made. I wake up wanting to work.

I'm on the exact same track: AE and C4D animation, with a little UX experience. I'm spending today tweaking my portfolio and getting some tips from a mentor. PM me if you want to chat further.
