Been hearing mixed reviews especially for newer formed teams. What are typical hours like?

I joined 6 months back and my manager is super micro managing and my wlb is not that great.
Working 9 to 10 hours per day.

Please decline it, Shopify stepped away years ago from micromanaging and the exploitation mentality is not welcome. I hear Amazon are thriving on both so maybe try there?

If you prefer wlb over compensation then Shopify is for you. I’m fairly new to Shopify and I’ve never ever experienced such good WLB, but the compensation lower.

Can’t comment on that, but I haven’t heard of many working 9-10 hours. I’ve in worked in the oil industry beforehand and 9-10 hours is half day 😂

Yep I’m ex-MBB so not shy to long hours. But I’m trying to minimize getting back into that especially if the pay doesn’t match up

  • I joined a little under a year ago. For obvious reasons I can’t detail the work I’m doing or for which team, but I’m an L6 engineer and the team is said to be 3 to 4 years old. The WLB is super laid back. My manager is of the opinion of “as long as you get the job done I don’t care what or how many hours you work”.

That said, it’s a double edge sword. I find my growth is slower than at other companies I’ve worked for. This is great if you feel burned out, but if you are in your early and prime years of your career, this may not work well in the long term. I am considering changing teams, even companies if the right opportunity comes along.

Really appreciate this insight! I’m more in the burned out stage of my career right now lol
That being said, from the interviews the team mentioned they’re fairly newly formed and subtly mentioned that it can be a grind - just wanted to get some perspective on what “grind” at shopify could look like

I’m a L5 engineer, and I don’t find it super laid back. How fast do your projects move?

Work-life balance at Shopify is usually pretty great compared to others regardless of the team. I'm sure there are exceptions but it's rarer

Do you have insights on teams with the best/worst wlb?
