Are transgender engineers a common sight in big tech? Asking for a friend.

Define common because the percentage of trans as compared to the population is low so chances of becoming a common sight unless they all work at a few places is low. People weirdly expect over-representation to replace proportional representation.

@slept that’s interesting do you have the link by chance? i wonder why that is. i wonder if it’s true for both M->F and vice versa.

i didn’t think tech was that liberal but an over representation might say that it is. tech jobs also provide more $$ / health reimbursements which help w that.

If the trans folks in the population represent 100% of all trans people you can’t have more than 100%. I think what you mean is trans people are more likely than not to be in tech, which I buy.

Can they crack interview and perform well at the job? That’s all matter. Nobody cares about anything else.

  • I know a few at Microsoft and I'm not even at HQ - I'm at a US satellite office. We even have a CVP who publicly transitioned (and subsequently detransistioned for health reasons) named Michael Wallent. If you google "From Michael to Megan and back again", you'll find his blog detailing the whole process and how it was being at Microsoft throughout.

I should note, I am gay and have found that I tend to have more exposure to the alphabet soup mafia than most of my cishet friends, so your mileage may vary.

Yes. The only thing that should matter is whether they can do the job

Haven't met any. I know lots of trans people but most of them are in the arts/creative fields or social work, psychology etc. Lots of gay people in tech and lesbians in the space sector in particular
