Majority of people here have same background and trajectory of life: strong math background > top school > FAANG But is there anyone who managed to got into FAANG with not typical background If so, can you please share with your story
High school grad here. Never went to college. Came from a lower-middle class background. I guess that counts.
Did you get in through a referral? Or what do you think made your resume stick out from the rest?
Ditto.
I went to community college, then transferred to senior college no top private school just your basic CUNY school and I finished with a 2.7 gpa.
Sure, I know someone who had an art degree, self employed for sometime, then went to Netflix, then Google, then Citadel, as a SWE no less True rags to riches story.
Barely graduated high school. Screwed around in community college finally got serious after having a family got associates then bachelors about to finish MBA none of them big name or top schools. No tech experience mostly healthcare got hired into FAANG almost tripling my TC.
Healthcare to faang without tech experience, how?
@chultya a door opened at a career fair and I crushed the interviews. Can’t really explain it more than that. I’m definitely very fortunate.
I was in pharmacy school in a 6 yr direct program from high school. I was dismissed 3 semesters before getting my PharmD. I thought my life was falling apart. Got my BS in comp sci after 2 years from the same shitty school I went for pharmacy. I learned nothing, had to teach myself coding on my own. I’ll be starting at Amazon as an SDE in May. I’m also the first Amazon SDE coming from my school (if LinkedIn is accurate) hah! It all works out in the end...
Went to a highschool with stabbings at football games, paid my way through community college with part time dishwasher job, transfer to finish cs degree at a no name, swe job out of school, studied, swe at bigN
What is bigN?
It's the proper term instead of the dumb faang
Deadbeat father, mother made minimum wage, grew up on welfare. Made it into a good school and took on a lot of debt to pay for it. Didn’t make it into FANG right away, took me 10+ years of working at startups to get here. Will finally be paying off my school loans this year.
Studied ChemE for a couple years and dropped out. Backfilled CS in night school while working as an intern/swe at a no name startup. The rest of the path was pretty conventional (leverage experience into better offers)
Almost didnt graduate HS (truancy). Didnt finish college. My first tech job was $11/hr.

I graduated with an economics degree. Didn’t go to an Ivy League school. Worked for a few years in a non-tech role. Transitioned into software engineering 3 years ago. Currently unemployed, not FAANG, but I secured an offer as an SDE2 from Amazon and I’m in the team matching phase for Google. I may end up walking away from Amazon and waiting out the team matching.
I came to blind to ask what quality does any FAANG engineer must have? I am having self doubt now and so asking if I am able to fix it. Thanks in advance!
same I am from a Econ degree
