Any well funded hardware team looking for PhDs?

Apr 10 56 Comments

I currently work for an aerospace startup in the Bay Area. The work isn’t very challenging anymore and volunteer 2 months severance was recently offered. Red flag for me. I just got promoted to senior design engineer and have a PhD. Any help/ suggestions?

Edit1: by hardware I meant mechanical engineering/ structures/ materials/ etc.

Edit2: TC: 205 k without stocks, not public company
YoE: 1.5 + PhD

Edit3: I’m not at Joby anymore. My current employer is a smaller startup in the aerospace industry. I’d probably lose anonymity on Blind if I updated.

What kind of hardware? All the big chip companies are hiring and are very well funded.

    • I added an edit. I meant more on the mechE kind of roles. Guess there are more chip related openings.

    • The wafer fab equipment vendors (Lam, AMAT, etc) are all hiring a lot of MEs but might not be what you’re looking for. Lots of vacuum chamber, general mounting/fixtures, thermal and gas flow mech design. For 1.5 yrs + PhD probably won’t get to your current TC though.

I’m actually in the Philly site now too lol. I work in the Philadelphia design center. I’m a structural design engineer, and I was in charge in area for small components. I had to create design supports using different manufacturing techniques. It was pretty open, just had to gain trust from my lead. Since you will be a senior designer, level 3 or 4, you will have more say and will potentially lead a team.

Only temporarily. We can't rely on fossil fuel forever.

Design engineers are only in high demand for part of the product lifecycle in aerospace. You'll have as much as 10x the personnel working on development vs post-launch maintenance. It's very unlikely they're going under and highly likely that they're ramping down their R&D as certification progresses.

Meta research labs has roles in just about everything imaginable. Funds are essentially unlimited.

Message me for a referral if you can find a good role in the career pages you're interested in. Much of the really obscure materials research is in WA not CA, though.

Hardware tech for the metaverse covers literally every field related to physical objects. It's obviously not a large priority of the company but if you can imagine it there's probably a team in RL research trying to make it.
