Hey everybody. This isn't meant to be a controversial topic; I'm trying to help my friends find a solution and maybe bring them some peace. A lot of people in my network are Black DEI leaders. They are wonderful people, some of whom I personally know and am currently working with. The others in my network are people connected to those I know who I began following to gain new perspective. I am not going to sit here and deny an experience a group of people are having just because I haven't had it myself. I have seen their exhaustion and frustration by this firsthand. I have seen the abundance of documentation they've collected every time there is an incident. They showed me that LinkedIn is continuously Shadow Banning posts meant to create awareness around racism and white supremacy. They aren't targeting all white people; they aren't promoting racism; they aren't promoting violence. They are merely raising awareness to issues; educating people on things that must change; they are speaking about their experiences. Unfortunately, they are being overwhelmingly and unfairly censored - especially when they criticize LinkedIn for doing what it is doing. Now sure you might say that it's in the brand's best interest to censor as an effort to protect its reputation...or that you know, because it's their platform, they have a right to do that....BUT... Consider this... One of the most disgusting aspects about the corporate world, to me anyway, is its blatant failure to admit wrongdoing or error. This is something that affects all of us as customers and employees. It's inauthentic AF. And these companies would have you believe they have been on the forefront of social progress for centuries...when they only just picked up their act because of BLM. So meanwhile...as the Black community is censored for challenging the systems and powers that be....you've got a bunch of angry, violent trolls commenting on their posts with threats of actual violence. One Black female DEI leader with a large following, I believe, actually had a BRICK thrown through her window by one of these people. Now I anticipate some people thinking...well, she has the choice to remove herself from or disguise herself on social media....that it's her responsibility to protect herself. You're right, sure...she could do that...and that's precisely what oppression is. There are people trying to violently silence the Black community and by hiding in fear or walking away from it completely, those angry violent crazy people win. LinkedIn seems to favor censorship against the Black community and pays less heed to those who wish to silence, oppress, and hurt the Black community just because they don't agree. So I have no doubt there are a bunch of people here thinking about how that happened to the GOP on Twitter as well, among a variety of other incidences...but listen, I'm not posting this to draw a comparison. I'm not here to be a hypocrite. I am here to specifically focus on helping people I respect, support, and care about. Social media censorship is a complicated area - not just for the end-users, but for the companies themselves as well as the law and various other people and factors. I am here posting as an independent thinker with no party, and I will defend the rights of any human being, regardless of party, to my own death. I support PEOPLE, not politics - an agenda I need to emphasize because I know that this is a trigger topic for many people. Again, I am not here to debate with anyone about politics. This is about protecting people's safety and protecting their voices. Please don't take this to be anything other than that. I am happy to respect the opinions of any person willing to respect the opinions of any other person, regardless of whether they agree and especially when they disagree. That being said, is there anyone here that can help? Is there anyone that works at LinkedIn who could arrange a meeting between the LinkedIn executives who have the power to make a difference and several of the largest influencers in the DEI space? The goal of such a meeting is to ensure that these people are heard by the people who most need to listen. RIght now, LinkedIn is not doing enough to listen to its user base - which is ironic. And if it IS, if LinkedIn IS making changes that we are merely unaware of, it would be equally as valuable to share this information with the group. In fact, it could be advantageous for LinkedIn to share this information with these users so they can communicate it to their followers...and reduce the tension. This is a long post, but I hope that those who made it all the way through can understand why I needed to include such an extension preface to my question. I am a peaceful person. I don't want this post to create tension for anyone here - there's enough of that in the world already. I am not asking anyone to do or say or believe anything that they disagree with; if you are upset by anything I've written here, I'm sorry. I am not trying to make a political statement. I am trying to help my friends and colleagues. We are all at the mercy of big tech, corporate America, the government....and effing Comcast (or whatever monopoly you get your internet from). The people highest up in these organizations have so much control over our lives, our well-being...we have more unity on this front than we are divided on the political front. So please, if you have the power to help me orchestrate a meeting to protect ALL people from violent crazy social media trolls; to protect all people from being silenced by the fear these trolls create; if you have the power to help me reduce tension and bring together two groups so they can find a solution together....please DM me here. Ultimately, a win for Black people will be a win for us all. Companies don't listen to US nearly enough or as well as they should. That's why nearly every single one of you is here; that is why this app exists in the first place. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Too long ! What is shadow banning?
You're so right, bad habit. I'm so afraid of triggering people these days, so maybe the length in itself is protection. Shadow Banning is when a social media company blocks your content for whatever reason, but makes it visible to you or only a few people in your network so that you can't tell that you're being censored. So you might write a post that gets shadow banned....and I can see it (assume I'm your friend on a network) and your other friends you talk to the most can see it...but no one else can see it except maybe 10 people. I don't know if it's always this method; sometimes no one can see what you post but you...and sometimes they show a message that does alert you to the shadow ban. I don't fully understand it and it seems like a dirty tactic. I have ideas for alternative methods that work better for social media and for the end-users, but...yeah. Hope that helps!
Lol
Didn't read lol
Here it comes again
What's coming!!
I heard that these people are also referring DEI as - Discrimination, Exclusion and Ignorance. Dirty tactic.
Got any evidence?
That's not evidence, it's somebody else making the same claims as you
It would help your case if you start with concrete evidence. For example, executing A/B tests with a white and black person with similar network outreach posting the same content and the black person receiving significantly fewer impressions.
I imagine many (MANY!), like me, report DEI content on LinkedIn as offensive, i.e., LinkedIn users are probably doing the "shadow banning" of said content, and the producers of it, not LinkedIn itself.
Thanks! That's a helpful consideration.
Genuine question, Google: why do you consider it (/report it) as offensive?
