I see some interesting positions open at D+ in SF. It's a traditional company, not tech, so I'm a bit apprehensive. What's the tech stack like? The culture, the WLB? Does management "get" tech goals, pacing, and requirements? Are salaries competitive? In terms of prestige and door-opening potential, would it be better to take a higher title at D+, or make a lateral move to the same title at Facebook or Netflix? I already have Amazon on my resume so I don't know if another FAANG is necessary, but I could be wrong.
I think brand weight is pretty strong regardless of tech starch and they're ramping up so I'd say go for senior at D
Scala on AWS. There are a lot of Amazon people up the entire chain (President was VP of Prime Video and he poached everybody). The culture is pretty similar because of that from what I’ve heard. We even stole/reworded the LPs. It’s not bad though. WLB is pretty good and management “gets tech” and are respected. Projects are almost entirely bottom up. Pay is below FAANG, but not bad. SDE III at Amazon would probably need to come in at Director level for it to make sense which is essentially a different job altogether. Its the best job I’ve had, but I would probably go for Netflix/Facebook still for the prestige. The only reason I would consider here over that is if you want to do full remote because a lot of teams are open to it.
Thanks for the comprehensive response! Very helpful. I'm SDE III (L6) but I was targeting a manager or lead position. The director I took a call with has way more experience than I do. You've sold me, going to apply. The growth opportunity looks way better than optimizing something at FB.
Curious, how much below is pay?
Free popcorn.
Free silver pass to go to Disneyland for free I guess. Plus visits to Disney campus which is pretty cool if you're a Disney fan.
