Anyone else notice the marked increase in passive anti Indian feeling in the Bay Area?

Nov 13, 2018 72 Comments

3 passive incidents I encountered in the past week during ride-sharing alone. These are 15 minute rides which I'm summarizing here. I stay quiet and listen, I don't respond to these btw.

White male, 45-55 years old: Asks dozens of questions on my visa status, how a transfer was possible, what work I do, why can't someone else do it, etc. Proceeded to turn up the volume during Trump's rhetoric on radio news, followed by "You hear that? Trump is not going to allow immigrants to stay here"

African American woman, 30-40 years old: Long spiel on how AMZN, FB, Google don't hire local African Americans, but only hire Indians as SDEs displacing them from places they were brought up in.

White Eastern European woman, 25-30 years old: Indians are the only people being hired in high paying jobs because 'their degrees are valid in the US', and no other ethnicity gets opportunities in the US.

I am an unmistakably Indian guy wearing a tech logo'ed hoodie through all these instances. I am going to safely assume these were not well intentioned. I've lived in the US for 5 years in tech cities, but there seems to be a marked increase in anti-Indian sentiment in recent times. The current Government has successfully emboldened these people to say what they always felt.

End of rant.

Buy a car so that you don't have to give a damn. End of the day this is not our country and we don't belong here. Make enough money so that you can live in India comfortably and then leave.

    • FYI - not every brown is an immigrant . Color of the skin has nothing to do with who belongs here or not . This is the land of immigrants. It is not their comments that’s offending you, seems like your own insecurities. Reading up on American history, laws, helped me get through this. You don’t owe anything to anybody as long as you are paying your taxes. Keep your head high, and be proud of the innovations and contributions of all the immigrants in this country. Ignore the losers.

Subtly let them know, they are entitled to nothing.

If they choose to pursue a fucking arts degree, they cannot magically learn to code.

Do however many boot camp you want the Indian person having seen the struggle back in India will come on top, not because he is intelligent or smart but what drives him and the American are two totally different things.

As Qualcomm said, the mindset is completely different. Moving to the opposite part of the globe, finding employment within the restrictive student visa, beating the odds to get a work permit, finding employment despite restrictions and increasingly hostile policies that threaten one's status in the country.... You can't compare most Indian tech immigrants's drive to succeed vs the average citizen who takes up some coding academy courses for his/her next job.

But most of the indians I see aren’t coding, they’re pushing spreadsheets around. Lots of people can do these jobs.

All you have to do is say: oh that’s great to hear you say. They have such a hard time hiring engineers here locally. Do you know how to code? I can give you a referral to submit your resume.

In reality they just want to complain and jealous about the crappy life choices they made. If they really wanted to change their life they can learn to code and get a damn job. Not that hard or a damn conspiracy to keep Americans from having their jobs.

This. Show the willingness to help them. That is when they know now they have no other excuse left.

    • There are a ton of lower skilled jobs where Americans are being squeezed out. Most Americans are not expecting to work at Google. It's those making like $50k who are getting hammered by the import of cheap foreign labor.

  • Our immigration policies have hurt working class Americans. I don't blame them for being pissed.

It is not natural for a sovereign nation to import over a million legal immigrants annually. There will be consequences.

    • I never condoned what the Uber drivers said. I'm simply saying that there's a reason why so many working class Americans are upset with our immigration policy. Both parties have failed the people, and it's a major reason why Trump is President.

Not snarky - I would really like to get honest opinions/answers:
Anti-immigrant sentiments I have personally encountered range from legal tech to illegal produce pickers.

How is legally importing educated and capable people who can do a job hurting those who can’t or won’t do a job?

How is this hurting working class Americans?

For illegal migrants, why aren’t employers that hire them punished?

Why give a fuck! As long as you have a good job, your colleagues are awesome, and you are learning everyday and are getting the right opportunities to move ahead, you will conquer all. labor omnia vincit - my friend. All the rest is just complete crap. Pay no attention. Wherver you go in the world, be happy, spread love, be brilliant
