Anyone lied about competing offer during negotiation?
Think about what you will say if they ask to see the competing offer. Some managers will ask for it, others won’t
Depends on what you mean. I wouldn't recommend lying about the existence of another offer though
What would you have to lie about? Comp? why don't you just say "I'm currently at $X but looking to get closer to $Y in order to do the move" However, to be fair for that strategy to work it is advised to not expose current attrition that is making you consider leaving and instead just say "there's nothing wrong with my current company, I'm just really considering doing something different".
You shouldn't give your current salary unless it's already top of market since they'll use that to pay however close to it they can. There should actually be no reason for you to ever specify your current salary
And it's now against the law n Cali for them to even ask current salary
Usually if they cannot match the competing offer, they will rescind their offer. Thats risky imo.
Not true at all... they will make as competitive an offer as they can and hope that they can sell you on the company and culture enough to cover the difference. Have literally never heard of any company rescinding an offer because there was competition.
Have been burnt once.
Just ask for what you want. No need to lie
It’s a gr8 idea , but it has higher risk of getting backfired. “Don’t take flying arrow in your buttocks.”
Yeh Sali Zindagi fan spotted.
True
What’s the point? If it’s for more money then be honest and ask upfront, I don’t mind saying we can’t go that high and come to a reasonable offer. I had a candidate who said he had another offer he really wants to take and wanted more money from us - his story began to fall apart in the details. We rescinded his offer and a year later he is still at his original company.
Maybe he got a counter offer from his company. You never know. That doesn't prove that he is a liar.
Damn. You must be old school with a SN like that. 😂👌
I did lie about competing comp. before recruiter was like oh our max is this. I presented the number and he’s like oh we can do better... don’t trust their “max” number
I always focus on what it would take to get me to take the job we're discussing. I've never had any issues. I've had a number of wow, that's a lot conversations (mostly recruiters who found me on LI) but my comp is level appropriate for big tech. The key is to have a realistic expectation of what your market value is and to make sure they are targeting the correct level.
Are you asking because you are considering doing this?
And you're asking this because it's what you do? Ask others about something you're considering
Some people just ask because they’re curious. Why not stop being a douche bag.
