After a lot of long hours in prior jobs, I came to Google to take a rest. I've been here for 2 years and feel fairly recharged.

A lot of people start/continue coasting at L5 and I know it's kind of the fantasy of a lot of people in Blind, so no need to elaborate on that on this thread.

That said, coasting has some tradeoffs such as slower career advancement, not getting staffed in the most interesting and impactful projects and less learning.

What I'm interested in this thread is: Anyone coasted and regretted it?

L5 $500K (a lot of stock appreciation. prolly $350K after cliff)

I don’t get the coasting mentality. Given the rigors of getting into Google (& similar) “just to coast”… tbh that sounds like crazy privilege and seems like a waste of all that supposed talent. What am I missing?

I've coasted till my mid 30s, decided to turn things around and joined Google. Now I work at least 30 hours a week, sometimes even pushing 35. Despite the terrible WLB, I love the work and my colleagues, so I'll continue slave away in their honor!

Did you actively decide to coast or did it just happen?

Why would you regret living your life instead of slaving it away at the hands of billionaires? Like this logic makes no sense to me. Do you really not have enough self worth that you think slaving yourself is a better way to live your life than being free and enjoying it?

I don’t regret coasting itself that much but I’ve been PIPed 4 times. When I get PIP I regret it because now I have only 3 YoE but 5 years of unemployment gaps. And I have never held down a job for more than a year so my resume looks like a job hopper’s, even though I’ve never left a job voluntarily. There are other things I regret, like not moving to a country where 1-3 months’ notice is required before they fire you (most European countries).

In some countries, it's not just the notice period but performance based layoffs are almost impossible. That's why FAANG is mostly in the UK which is close to the US
