Higher TC for worse WLB doesn’t appeal to ke, but are there other things good about FB for SWE/eng mgr I should consider?
TC is significantly higher to make it worth it. I am making 450k with 7 YOE. Almost Impossible outside FB.
Xoogler here Pro: Less process and BS overhead. Internal culture imo is better (less entitled). Facebook is easier to move up quickly if you are good. Con: On average more stress TC: 850k
Another pro: pretty good internal tooling. I’ma miss our graph database a lot when I leave.
I'd give my left nut for spanner (if the migration was already done). Our storage is really easy to use, but sacrifices as lot elsewhere. The data tools and data culture though are amazing 👌
Can you elaborate on “sacrifices a lot elsewhere”? Genuinely curious.
Interesting work, big scale. Very disorganized sometimes, but you get a lot of independence. A lot of ex Google people around me, they seem happy with the switch. The codebase is trash, though.
Well, first of all, not only you're rewarded for impact, you also have flexibility to find it. Boundaries between teams/areas aren't too strict, you can also be on loan to another team (hackamonth) with no commitment to transfer afterwards. Getting things done sometimes means leakier abstractions, but at the same time you can optimize vertically across many parts of the company instead of just sitting in your own silo. WLB is also not that bad, if you pick your pace. If you know what to work on and how to work on it, you will be clocking lower number of hours and still be incredibly effective. The bad WLB is self-inflicted issue for many - you're just supposed to control your time yourself. Block your time, avoid going to every meeting possible, demand agenda/structure when needed, etc. Also people around you can be incredibly smart and motivated.
Higher levels of stress, lots of politics, and a psc-driven culture that sometimes pits engineers against each other. That is the downside. On the upside, less bureaucracy than Google and to some extent Amazon. More bottom up driven. Overall, unless TC is significantly higher, it is not worth it.
Psc?
