So now apple does not want you to turn off your Wi-fi. With recent change in iOS 11, the wifi toggle button in control center does not turn off your wifi, rather just disconnect you from wifi. While it doesn't seem much, this little change in feature will allow apple to continuously track you via wifi networks that your phone will detect. Traditional tracking via GPS/Carrier network can only track you to a certain address (Shopping mall, for example), but tracking via Wifi lets apple track you as precisely as exact location in a building (like, which shop in the shopping mall or which table in the restaurant.) https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208086
Things that help with this sort of tracking are tin foil hats, voodoo paraphernalia, and shaman gear. Use all three in conjunction for best results.
Privacy and surveillance are pretty serious issues and customers care about them. Dismissing your customers’ concerns as paranoia or lunacy is not a great way to address. Apple has a pretty good track record, but that doesn’t mean they will always do the right thing. If this is how you address your customers’ concerns then IMHO they have a right to be suspicious.
Is that what Apple recommends to its employees to avoid getting tracked, as part of employs benefits. 😂😂😂
This apple is tracking us and all tech companies are equally evil trope has got to stop. You guys have no idea how seriously Apple takes user privacy and the ends to which it goes to ensure privacy. We don’t mine any aspect of your personal data. As someone who has to deal with privacy related engineering at Apple this shit infruriates me no end.
Yada yada yada.... Please!! privacy is so 2008... Today its all about ad revenue and behavioral data mining. Look us in the eye dear privacy related engineer and tell us that you don't mine what our routine is. That you dont mine "most of the time spent is at starbucks", good candidate to onboard on apple pay...
No we don’t - any behavioral suggestions are done completely on your phone - and Apple has no idea of an individuals preferences . We use a lot of differential privacy to ensure that we don’t get any uniquely identifiable individual info. Apple has published several papers on this , so read up - and Apple generally doesn’t like to publish anything.
Just because Amazon is doing it doesn’t mean Apple is..
Guys. This seems pretty harmless. It has nothing to do with tracking at all. If you really want to know who is tracking you, open your google maps app and view your location history. That’s mind blowing.
When I click the button to turn off my google maps location history it actually does turn it off, instead of using shady change’s to make it look like its off. That’s something Apple could learn from Google.
And about harmless, its as harmless as the intention of the feature requester/stake holder.
Are you fucking retarded.
You got to be kidding me. OP is concerned about wifi tracking location? That is not even accurate statement. any engineer should know some basics. Lol
You can tell Siri to “turn off Wi-Fi” (or go to Settings) to turn it off completely if you’re actually concerned about this. Most people want airplay and airdrop to work even if they’re not on their home network, which is weak in their bedroom.
You got to be trolling us. For the scenarios that you are talking about they would still work without this change. Humor me: Let's say I am outside my home network. But my wi-fi is on. Would air drop and air play not work? How is that any different from disconnected but "on" wi-fi? The use case you and the PR are talking about was never broken.
That button was to quickly turn off the radio hardware. And that functionality has been taken away by this change in the name of supporting a feature that was already there and wasn't even broken in the first place.
