Apply to Another Internship or Full Time?
Hey, I should be graduating in May 2019 and currently have a software engineering internship at AT&T (First and Only Internship). Finished my project early to much appraise and am starting another one so I am confident I will get an offer from here. My question is this: Should I “delay” graduation till Dec 2019 and apply to Big N internships for the next summer or just grind leetcode and try my luck at full time. Other info: -I did get interviews from the Big 4 last year but didn’t make it past first round phone interviews for all but Facebook. Amazon Oa1 and 2 were perfect idk what happened there except for it being very late in the hiring season -Non target -Meh GPA Obligatory: yoe .10 tc $30 (hour) Edit: My goal is a like everyone else here, a tier 1 company or as close to it as possible Edit: I’m still in undergrad
I'm going to go again ^Kappa^ on this one. The long term potential is burned by getting stuck at worse companies with less complex projects that happen in a slow development cycle. Get the additional internship and try to do something you haven't done at the other internships. The only reason that i got my job is because this white male had >3 internships. If they saw a fresh white guy with a bachelor's and no experience, I would have been shown the janitor's closet
No hard feelings for going against my opinion. I based mine on the fact that Morgan Stanley did not consider my internships (5 of 15 weeks each) in my salary. I went to their training and left a year and a half after as they would only base someone hired straight out of school salary's by YOE after graduation.
Yeah, that's definitely a bummer in the industry and was pretty much the same for me (managers get some wiggle room in a range). I saw a lot of job req's that listed internships as a must and wanted >6 months of some related work. There are plenty of job req's that don't mention internships, but the internships will send you to the top of the pile. We probably benefitted significantly during the interview process due to our experience
This debate is what I am truly interested in. Will taking a lower tier position effect my potential to join a FANG equivalent in the near future? I know that it’s doable per say but i think it’s significantly more difficult. I’m thinking more about long term finances and exciting career opportunities than short term finances.
Whatever you do, know it is possible to go from a company like Morgan Stanley (not tier 1) to FANG. I currently am at Amazon and had interviews with Facebook and Google too (which I failed. No shame).
Delaying graduation could hurt your salary for a few years. Graduate, try your shot at the big ones again for a full time position. Worst case is you get a low tier company in which you'll gain experience and try the companies you really want again a year later.
