Hello everyone, I'm currently maxed out my potential in my current role and want to move onto a new company. I graduated last year and got hired as a PM 2. I've been in the position for 3 years now and had an offer within the company but turned it down. Does anyone have advice on applying to some of the big name places? I have a contact at google and VMware but I want to also explore companies like Facebook and uber. Thanks for the help
Are you interested in PM jobs?
If your contacts give a referral, you should be able to get an interview without much issue. Don't worry about fb or uber. Focus on getting into the tech ecosystem first. In your case Google and VMware will be the easiest. It is very easy to move around within the ecosystem. Getting in is the tricky part - people usually get in via an internship. You can use a referral. Recruiters doing first-pass screening of candidates will quickly filter away people who aren't already in the ecosystem. The hiring bar is insanely low for software. Practice lots of leetcode Anyone with half a brain and who enjoys programming can get into fb or google. Rising through the ranks is much harder. I imagine not too many of the general population could make it to senior.
Thanks that's really helpful. I figured that would be the best bet. Do you think it's worth taking a downgrade job to get into the ecosystem. Also do you think if I get too much experience outside of the big firms I'll have a hard time getting in? By the way my background is actually in finance although I work in an IT department I manage most of the forecasting and budgets.
I have no idea about non-eng stuff. The way I see it, its way easier to get into a top company as an engineer than anything else. Good luck!
