I just moved to silicon valley, not a SWE, just an Engineer. I see a lot of the silicon valley tech culture as very toxic. Not to pick on SWE, or silicon valley, because other career choices and locations align with this stereotype as well. But, are you truly passionate about what you are working on? Is the chase of “prestige” worth it? This post was inspired by a bunch of haters saying a 28 year old making 180k TC only working 10 hours a week shouldnt be concerned with WLB and essentially should be trying to make more money, and gain status. I could rant more but..... do yall ever take a step back and question what you are chasing? #wlb #passion #swe
A job is a job at the end of the day. So why not just chase more 💵?
It’s observation bias. If people weren’t happy here, they’d move someplace cheaper.
I l8ke it. Building interesting things. Learning stuff. Yea, there are some negative parts like any job, but overall I can't think of a career that better suits me. Not sure if you're getting the prestige fixation from just blind (which like all social media distorts reality to certain extents)if you just run into some of more annoying folks around the bay but.a good WLB can be found. 10 hours a week though? Damn. I would actually feel weird working that little no matter what the job was.
Priorities change over time except TC. On that note, TC?

All work is dumb. Chasing more money.
